You can now see our wonderful visit to the Rose Theatre on the web!

Vodpod videos no longer available.

This was not only a visit to a really beautiful location – although it definitely was that! – but it also led to a fascinating discussion with the creator, Kaya Angel, on the ways in which one can create experiences in virtual worlds. Kaya believes in creating an experience that overcomes ‘virtuality’, and on the show he demonstrates some of the ways in which he sets out to achieve this at the Rose Theatre.

And after the show, we invited members of the studio audience to come over and join us for a dance – which many of them did!  It was a chance to explore the Rose Theatre for themselves – and also to join what became an impromptu party!  Caliburn Susanto took pictures of that – which you can see as part of his set of our visit to the Rose Theatre on Flickr.

If you would like to see the Rose Theatre in action, there are a selection of videos on their You Tube channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/ThePurpleRoseTheatre.  But do make sure you attend a live event – it’s a terrific experience!

Here is a Rose Theatre video of a performance by Skye Galaxy.

Rose Theatre: Exterior

Rose Theatre: Exterior

Join us in our Northpoint studio at 2pm SLT today, Monday 28th March as we visit a fascinating – and beautiful Second Life entertainment venue – the Rose Theatre.

Our guide will be the owner and creator Kaya Angel, and he will be showing off the stunning building and grounds he has created, including the Opera House, the Grand Ballroom, the art galleries, the cinema, the formal gardens … the list goes on and on, for this is really a remarkable space for entertainments of all kinds!

But one of the most fascinating aspects of this creation is the philosophy behind it.  Kaya believes that environment plays a vital role in performance – and that a realistic setting can heighten the intensity of that performance.  We will be discuss his ideas – and the way that his creation intensities that experience too.

The Designing Worlds show starts at 2pm SLT, but you should be in our Northpoint studios by 1.30pm at the very latest to make sure of getting a seat. And we’re asking that this week our audince come dressed for a ball, because after the show we will be inviting them to join us in the Rose Theatre to admire its beauties for themselves – and also to dance with us in the Grand Ballroom!

This show from Designing Worlds provides an opportunity to meet some of the artists working in the impressive art community of InWorldz: Nyx Breen, Miso Susanowa, Alizerin Goldflake, Ub Yifu, 10 Goosson and their dedicated patron Jeri Rahja. Saffia & Elrik give us a grand tour of just a few of the installations in progress.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

This was a very exciting show for Designing Worlds and for treet.tv as it was our first show shot entirely on a non- Second Life grid. In the past, we have explored other grids, but have always pre-filmed segments there which we then screen within our live show, which has always been filmed in Second Life. This  show had no component filmed in Second Life – it was all shot in Inworldz.

In addition, for the first time, we invited audiences to join us in the virtual world of their choice – either our regular studios in Northpoint, or in a specially created auditorium in Inworldz on Alexanderia, the sim that display Ub Yifu’s stunning Gulliver’s Travels creation.  And we were delighted to see that our Inworldz audience was as large as our regular Second life audience – there were even some regulars from our SEcond Life audience who had made the crossing – and were delighted with what they found!

In short, we hope this show marks the beginning of greater involvement with Inworldz, and with other grids.

Inworldz: Gulliver's Travels by Yifu

Join us in our Northpoint studio in Second Life at 2pm SLT today, Monday 14th March OR in the specially created auditorium in Inworldz at GULLIVER TRAVELS , Alexanderia (127, 110, 22), as we visit some of the amazing art installations created in Inworldz in the Art Regions founded by Jeri Rahja.

Jeri will be talking to Elrik and Saffia on the show, along with Inworldz artists  Ub Yifu, Miso Susanowa, Alizarin Goldflake, Nyx Breen, 10 goosson and Harry Prefect – as we explore some of the work they have been creating.

Today’s show from Designing Worlds is a very special one for three reasons.

Firstly, it will be our first show shot entirely on a non- Second Life grid.  In the past, we have explored other grids, but have always pre-filmed segments there which we then screen within our live show, which has always been filmed in Second Life.  Today’s show will have no component filmed in Second Life – it will all be shot in Inworldz.

Secondly, we will be visiting Inworldz to look at a special project within the grid, rather than exploring the grid itself as a phenomenon.  This is not the first time we have done this – when we visited the Science Grid, it was to look at the work being done there by Shenlei Winkler.  But since then, we have tended to look at alternative grids as a whole.  Now, increasingly, some of these grids are rich and diverse enough in themselves to warrant shows on aspects of their work – so look forward to more shows like today’s!

Thirdly, for the first time, we are inviting audiences to join us in the virtual world of their choice – either our regular studios in Northpoint, or in a specially created auditorium in Inworldz on Alexanderia, the sim that display Ub Yifu’s stunning Gulliver’s Travels creation.

But we are not suggesting that you watch the show for its historical significance!  No, today’s show contains some stunningly beautiful art installations, some fascinating works in progress and a chance to hear a number of outstanding virtual world artists talking about their work and their creations.  It is going to be an amazing show – making sure that you don’t miss it!

The Designing Worlds show starts at 2pm SLT, but you should be in our Northpoint studios OR at the auditorium in Inworldz  – GULLIVER TRAVELS , Alexanderia (127, 110, 22) – by 1.30pm at the very latest to make sure of getting a seat.

Please note that Inworldz viewers will need to watch the show through an external web browser – where they can also join in with the live char … this should be a great opportunity to discuss the show live with viewers in Second Life, in Inworldz AND those watching on the web!

Because – if you can’t attend in person – you can still tune in at 2pm SLT on Monday for the live show – where you can chat with other audience members and even some of the participants during the show – or you can catch the show later in the week on our Designing Worlds’ page on the Treet.tv web site.

It’s the time of year to celebrate all things Irish – and Designing Worlds did it with a trip to Greater Ireland, where Saffia and Elrik met Derric Foggarty, Jules Artful and Kitty Nakajima, Greater Ireland – the creators of Great Ireland.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Greater Ireland has a reputation for great music and visual authenticity, and we looked at both of these in the programme – along with the development of The region (from the original Irish bar that it all started with – Buddy’s Bar)  – and plans for the future.

And we get to hear some of that great music too!  Caoilte Skytower is the musician playing in Durty Nelly’s at the end of the show, and you can see him regularly performing in Greater Ireland, playing live at Buddy’s Bar every Saturday night at 2pm slt.  You can learn more about Caoilte and hear some of his music on the Buddy’s Bar Blog.

If you want more information about Greater Ireland, you’ll find it’s the featured Region of the Month in the latest issue of Prim Perfect Magazine.

Join us in our Northpoint studio at 2pm SLT today, Monday 14th March as we have an early celebration of St Patrick’s Day by paying a visit to Greater Ireland – and make sure you all wear your best Irish green for the show!

We’ll be visiting a region that’s drawn much praise for its loving and authentic re-creation of Ireland, from the beaches of the West Coast in Clare to the small rural villages such as Doolin, from the Pavee camp to lively towns like Limerick – and giving us a flavour of modern Ireland where the old mixes with the new.  The managers of this beautiful region – Derric Foggarty,  Jules Artful and Kitty Nakajima – will be telling us how greater Ireland developed, and sharing with us some of the stories that lie behind its creation.

And we’ll be getting all the craic and the music too in one of Greater Ireland’s many pubs – and music venues!

This week Elrik and Saffia were joined in the studio by Kamiliah Hauptmann, Vice-Reine of Caledon and animation maker, to talk about how we animate our avatar bodies, and some of the challenges that animation makers face.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

We looked at the elements that go into creating animations and animation over-rides, and discovered how we could see more about the animations we ourselves are wearing. And Kamilah explains the vexed question of priorities and how animations need to be scaled in order to allow your avatar to walk carrying a handbag, a parasol or a walking stick!

Then we looked at a few non-human animations too, and while Saffia showed off one of her Grendel avatars that she acquired during our show a few weeks ago, the Ungal, we were joined on stage by Skylarian Isachenko as a golden fire lizard. With the Vice-Reine in the form of a white lionness and Elrik as a human, we were able to demonstrate quite a wide range of possibilities for animations!

All in all, this was a fascinating – and very informative show – with some fun things to watch out for too!

FUN and FUNDdraising

Relay for Life of Second Life 2011 Event Board

Relay for Life of Second Life 2011 Event Board

Last year, Relay For Life of Second Life raised $222,000. This year’s target is US$300,000. Event Chair MamaP Beerbaum said: ‘My main goals for this year’s event are to bring in new relayers, those we haven’t reached before, to have all of our relayers work as “one team”, helping one another, supporting each other, all working towards a common goal, and to have a successful fund raising season, setting new records in those efforts!’

She continued: ‘I love attending team events and I love interacting with our relayers. Everyone participates for their own reasons, but we share one common goal. The stories of our relayers bring everything to life for me.’

Stingray9798 Raymaker, the American Cancer Society’s representative in Second Life, added: “This year, Relay For Life of Second Life will raise its one millionth US dollar. This momentous occasion gives our volunteers a reason to rally, and a reason to get excited. It’s a special year and a landmark that has inspired our volunteers to think bigger, better, and to remember how amazingly unique and groundbreaking the Relay For Life of Second Life is. My hope for 2011 is that all of our volunteers have fun while participating in this event and have a fulfilled experience, knowing that they are leveraging technology to make a meaningful impact in the fight against cancer.”

Seasons of Hope
The theme of this year’s Relay For Life of Second Life is Seasons of Hope. Because every season – winter, spring, summer or fall – is a season of hope. As Event Co-Chair Dwen Dooley said: “Even in the shortest days, the darkest nights, the coldest winds, there is hope, and nothing can take that from anyone.” Stingray added: “Hope is the most important intangible that Relay For Life provides, because the work that volunteers, teams, survivors and caregivers do through Relay For Life allows newly diagnosed cancer patients opportunities for survival that didn’t exist years before. And that is the kind of hope that each season brings.”

About Relay For Life of Second Life
Relay For Life® is the signature fundraiser of the American Cancer Society. Relay For Life of Second Life (RFL of SL) is an annual activity that takes place in Second Life® in July each year. Volunteers form or join teams to have fun while fundraising and raising awareness from mid-March through mid-July. In July teams build campsites and walk a track, just like in a real world Relay. The main RFL of SL track event this year will take place on July 16-17. We will walk a virtual track for 24 hours, just like in a real world Relay For Life. Team members build and gather at their team campsites, enjoy live music, participate in fun events, and explore the many Relay sims and the incredible builds by some of Second Life’s top designers, as the event runs overnight and into the next morning.

In 2010 Relay For Life of Second Life attracted more than 120 teams with participants from over 30 countries, held over 300 team fundraising events between March and July, and raised over US$222,000 (that’s REAL US dollars) for cancer research and education. The funds raised go to research, advocacy, patient services and programs, with 12-15% going to international projects. Just as in the real world, RFL of SL is an international event.

Designing Worlds studio show - taken by Wildstar Beaumont

Designing Worlds studio show - taken by Wildstar Beaumont

Join us in our Northpoint studio at 2pm SLT today, Monday 7th March for a fascinating show today, as we explore the world of animations and animation over-rides.

Perhaps you already have an animation over-ride that you adore or – on the other hand – perhaps you just wish you could stop walking like a duck, but haven’t worked out how to do it yet!

We will be looking at the animations that move us through our world – and also those that make us sit, stand, fly and perform a dozen other actions that we may not even think about, but which all add verisimilitude to our avatars as we move through the Second Life grid.

We will be talking to Kamilah Hauptmann, Vice-Reine of Caledon, and creator of some extremely popular animations and animation over-rides, and she will be sharing some of the fascinating world of animations with us – explaining, for example, why a mermaid needs to fly, why sometimes we can be left frozen on the dance floor, why the default walk makes us all look like ducks … and why having head rot is really not a bad thing at all!

The Designing Worlds show starts at 2pm SLT, but you should be in our Northpoint studios by 1.30pm at the very latest to make sure of getting a seat.

Or – if you can’t attend in person – tune in at 2pm SLT on Monday for the live show – where you can now chat with other audience members and even some of the participants during the show – or catch it later in the week on our shows page on the Treet.tv web site.

Join us on a journey to the dark beauties of Winterfell, a fantasy region that ranges from dark Victorian to the high fantasy of the northern forests.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

We were joined on our journey by Serra Anansi, the Senschelf of Winterfell (and for an explanation of that title, you will need to see the show!) and Captain Wildstar Beaumont, a long-time supporter of both Winterfell and Designing Worlds (who found it fascinating to be on the other side of the cameras!). The Captain, of course, may be better known to some of you as the avatar behind Ralph Montcalm, hero in the web comic, The Quest for the Golden Prim.

We managed to see quite a lot of this fascinating region, even if the seas did prove rather stormy when we took to the famous Winterfell Ferry (recently chosen by Steamlanders as the Most Romantic Location in the Steamlands).   So make sure you watch it soon!
