Last week we took an overview of the event, but today we’re going to be looking at a wide variety of resident builds – fun, thoughtful, beautiful, intriguing …

But …

We’re not going to tell you here what we chose!  If you want to find out – you’ll have to watch the show!

In this episode, Saffia and Elrik pay the first of two visits to the celebrations for Second Life’s Eighth Birthday (SL8B).

Vodpod videos no longer available.

On this visit we looked at the organisation and infrastructure of the event – we talked to Honour McMillan, one of the orgganisers, visited the Welcome Centre and saw the pods that zip people around the event, and saw there Main Auditorium where all week Prim Perfect ran a series of well-attended talks and discussions.  And we also visited the lovely Park Stage, where we met the creator, Paige Raven, who told us all about  the inspiration for her beautiful design.

And we saw something of the gifts on offer too, with Callie Cline telling us about the special birthday KittyCat! and Elrik learning about Bear Island.

The next episode will see us return to SL8B – this time to visit the resident builds.  Make sure that you don’t miss it!

In addition, Prim Perfect Publications (the company who produces Desigining Worlds in association with treet.tv) will be hosting a series of special talks, discussions and TV programmes with and about some of the people making magic in Second Life.

Our programme today, as well as the Designing Worlds show, is as follows:

SL8B Live: Meet the Artist!

At 4pm SLT, Rowan Derryth will have an otterly wonderful encounter with Scottius Polke, whose darkly whimsical paintings, drawings, sculptures and installations delight us all. The virtual identity of the artist Scott Rolfe, Polke’s work explores the ‘relationships between disparate ideas such as order vs. anarchy, innocence vs. corruption, nature vs. the machine… However, he places little moral judgment upon either side of these oppossing forces in the work. Rather, the art explores the dynamic that arises when these unlike forces are combined.’ Having explored his work in-depth in her article Ekphrasis: Scottius Polke, today Rowan will discuss immersive art with him, and the unique properties Second Life offers to virtual artists that cannot be achieved in the physical world.

SL8B: Creators of Community: Breedables

SL8B: Creators of Community: Breedables

And for our final event of the day, at 6pm SLT, we will be hosting the first of a series of discussions about Creating a Community in Second Life. Tonight the communities that we are looking at will be Breedables, and we have representatives from the world of KittyCatS! and Meeroos, who will be discussing how the communities have grown, and the ways in which they are sustained. And there will be a chance to put your questions to the creators too! Plus there will be the opportunity to meet the gorgeous creatures themselves… and to learn about a very special Birthday gift.

Prim Perfect is supporting a very full programme of special talks, discussions and TV programmes at the Main Auditorium over the week of the SL8B celebrations. You can see the full line-up here:

Join Designing Worlds in our Northpoint studio at 2pm SLT today, Monday 13th June as we pay on of our periodic visits to the city of New Babbage, where we will be visiting some fascinating re-creations of famous fictional and real life locations – including a meticulous rendering of Sherlock Holmes’ private consulting rooms in 221b Baker Street.

We will be accompanied  by Mr Victor1st Mornington, the Assistant Mace-Holder of New Babbage.  And, although our visits to New Babbage have been fraught with dangers and adventure in the past, we are sure that this episode will go completely to plan (despite the fact that we learn that the Babbage urchins have been particularly mischievous lately).  After all, the motto of New Babbage is “What Could Possibly Go Wrong?”

And yet, strangely, something always does!

The Designing Worlds show starts at 2pm SLT, but you should be in our Northpoint studios by 1.30pm at the very latest to make sure of getting a seat.  And this week we are asking people coming to the studio to wear their best and most respectable Victorian outfits to enter into the spirit of things.

Saffia and Elrik take one of their periodic trips to another grid and visit a fascinating series of communities there – linked by an Elven theme.

We met Balpien Hammerer who talked about his philosophy of communities as we explored Ardhon en Ceredir and Faelf Lands of the Sidhevairs. We also met Wayfinder Wishbringer of the Elf Clans, who told us about the development of their (currently) eighteen regions.  And we talked to Fleure Homewood of Falathrim about her art gallery and her popular venue for live music in the Elflands – ending with a chance to listen to the music of Russell Eponym.

It’s a fascinating look at the evolution and increasing sophistication of an Open Source based grid – make sure that you don’t miss it!

Ardhon en Ceredir in Inworldz

Ardhon en Ceredir in Inworldz

Join Designing Worlds jn our Northpoint studio at 2pm SLT today, Monday30th May as we pay a visit to the Elf Lands of Inworldz and talk to people involved in creating a fascinating series of communities in a whole new world!

Although Inworldz is amongst the most popular and stable of the new “walled garden” grids, there is still very much a sense of newness and freshness as people explore, try things out … and begin to found new communities.  Some of these communities have their origin in Second Life – such as the Elf Clan.  But now they are a very real presence in Inworldz too.

ElfClan Lands in Inworldz

We will be exploring several of these thematically linked, nascent communities in tonight’s Designing Worlds show. We’ll be talking to Balpien Hammerer about his philosophy of communities – and his wonderful boats – as we explore Ardhon en Ceredir and Faelf Lands of the Sidhevairs. We’ll be meeting Wayfinder Wishbringer of the Elf Clans, who will be telling us about the development of their (currently) seventeen regions.  And we’ll be talking to Fleure Homewood of Falathrim about her art gallery and her popular venue for live music in the Elflands.

There will even be a quick look at the commercial side of Inworldz as Saffia makes a stop to look for dress to suit her inner elf!

Saffia & Elrik visit Jabberwock and Port Charles for a look at the marvelous ships and the pirate role playing community with our guest, the owner of Jabberwock Antigua Jewell.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

While Saffia, visiting a disreputable Jabberwock tavern, finds out about the community of Jabberwock and its associated islands, Elrik explores the wonderful ships created by Martina Lewsey – with the help of the rascally Captain Tweed who takes him sailing.

And, as any crew of pirates needs the forces of authority to defy, Saffia travels to Port Charles to meet Commander Paul, Commander of British forces, and learn what the pirates are up against, while Elrik becomes involved in a sea battle …

It all makes for a rather exciting episode of Designing Worlds!
