This week, as we approach the 100th anniversary of the maiden voyage and sinking of the RMS Titanic following its collision with an iceberg in the North Atlantic, Designing Worlds visits a series of re-creations of this famous ocean liner in different Virtual Worlds.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Elrik Merlin explores the oldest and best-known of several Titanics in Second Life and talks to an expert on the vessel and the events that befell it, as well as visiting a poignant memorial; while Saffia visits Kitely and an OSGrid virtual Belfast, home of the Harland & Wolff Shipyards where the vessel was built, and explores a fascinating underwater representation – as well as seeing another incarnation in Inworldz.

Why does the Titanic hold such a deep fascination for so many people? What are some of the untold stories behind the disaster? What’s it like to stand on the great central staircase, or on the bow of the vessel with your partner and wave your arms about? Find the answer to these and many other questions in this extended edition of Designing Worlds – the last in the current series.

Designing Worlds takes to the air – literally! – again in late April  when we will be visiting the famous Flying Tigers.

Join us today, Monday 2nd April at 2pm SLT in our beautiful studio in Garden of Dreams when we will be showing a very special show to commemorate the launch and the sinking of the fabulous Titanic. And to do this, we’ll be visiting interpretations of that magnificent doomed ship in a variety of virtual worlds.

Firstly, Elrik will be exploring the oldest and original build in Second Life, owned by Mara Menges.  In the company of Mark Attenborough, an real life expert on the Titanic, he’ll be exploring the vessel and learning more about its famous story – with a wealth of detail that many people, familiar with the films perhaps, may never have realised.

Meanwhile, Saffia has been exploring other Titanics to be found in other virtual worlds.

On the OSGrid (an Open Sim environment), she meets Stiofain MacTomais, Paule Emery and Jazzy Chatterbox of the 3DCOLAB.com, three of the team of creators of the virtual Titanic that is part of the wider Virtual Belfast.  This is a different conception of the build, on the surface focusing on the role of the great Harland and Wolff shipyards in Belfast where the Titanic was constructed (and the impact that its launch and loss had upon the entire community there).  But the real surprise lies under the water …

This version is also in different stages of development in Kitely.

And Saffia takes a brief visit to a build of the Titanic in Inworldz too.
