This week’s show is a timely repeat of our conversation with some of the people from Linden Lab about server side baking and materials.

Join us at 2pm SLT today, Monday 30th September, for Designing Worlds at our studio in Garden of Dreams, as we are joined by Oz, Brooke, Troy and Nyx Linden to discuss the issues of Server Side Baking and materials.

Nyx, Troy, Oz and Brooke Linden explain the changes coming

The changeover to server-side baking appears to have gone smoothly, and materials are now coming in on a variety of viewers. But what does it all mean for the Second Life user?

Server side baking is a whole new way of solving the problem of avatars (and system clothing) that fails to load properly, by moving this from the viewer side client to the server side. Nyx and Troy Linden talk about this and explaining what Second Life users should expect.

Then Oz and Brooke Linden explain about materials, normal and specular maps, what this is and what it means for our Second Life experience. And there are samples to see too – when Oz and Brooke took us to see the work in progress at Hippotopolis.  You can go there and check out developments for yourselves but if you want to see the items properly displayed, you’ll need to download the special Materials Viewer (it doesn’t overwrite the main Linden Lab viewer).

Materials mean a richer Second Life experience, and creators are very excited about the possibilities! But don’t take our word for it – come and watch the show at 2pm!

Or – if you can’t attend in person – tune in at 2pm SLT on Monday for the live show on http://treet.tv/live – or watch it on the web at Treet.tv web site at http://treet.tv/shows/designingworlds/episodes/project-materials.

Our visit to the homage to the post World War Case Study Houses, with two of them being recreated in Second Life by the talented designer Painter Meriman is now on the web!

The Case Study Houses were experiments in American residential architecture sponsored by Arts & Architecture magazine, which commissioned major architects of the day to design and build inexpensive and efficient model homes for the United States residential housing boom caused by the end of World War II and the return of millions of soldiers. The core idea of a Case Study house was to hypothesize a modern household, elaborate its functional requirements, have an esteemed architect develop a design that met those requirements using modern materials and construction processes, and then to actually build the home. The houses were documented before, during and after construction for publication in Arts & Architecture.

Painter has created homages to two of these houses (both of which still exist in Pacific Palisades), the Entenza House (Case Study House No. 9) and the Eames House (Case Study House No.8). We will be looking at the buildings, and talking about the background to the Case Study Houses project – as well as taking a look at how this has inspired Painter’s latest home.

If you would like to learn more, you can see a short film made by the Eames family here.
