The show will take the form of a panel discussion ion the recent changes of the Terms of Service used in Second Life, which has sparked a great deal of controversy.  While it appears that Linden Lab are working on a redraft of this, we will be looking at the reason why the new Terms are a problem for various communities (and why some communities seem less affected). And we’ll be discussing the community’s response with Kylie Angel Skyborne of the United Content Creators of Second Life, and the legal aspects with Jamie Bryce Infinity, a lawyer with considerable expertise in this area.

Other guests include

  • Jilly Kidd, of the writer’s group Written Word
  • Chic Aeon, artist, machinimatographer, builder (past tense), blogger, store owner and curator of LEA7 – the Machinima Open Studio Project
  • Ramses Meredith, Owner of the leading fashion brand Egoisme
  • Cain Maven, designer and owner of Maven Homes and Quantum Luxury Homes

If you don’t make the live recording, you will be able to see the show when it goes out on Monday November 11th.

On Tuesday 29th October, Designing Worlds will be recording a special panel show about the Terms of Service introduced for Second Life by Linden Lab in August 2013.

This has raised huge questions about Creators’ Rights, with some people leaving Second Life, and some feeling that they can no longer encourage other people (such as artists) to bring their work to Second Life.

But others see the new Terms of Service as opening the doors to potential new markets for their digital creations, and believe that the Terms of Service (possibly in an amended form) are the way forward.

What do you think?  What do you need to know about this? What questions do you have about the new Terms of Service?

Send us your questions – either by commenting below or by email here – and we will try to see that these questions are raised and discussed by our panel – who will include representatives of

  • the United Content Creators of Second Life (an active Second Life group that has been working to redress widely perceived problems in the changed Terms of Service)
  • the art community
  • the design community
  • the writers’ community
  • the fashion community
  • the legal community

For your information, here are some posts that are informative, and reflect different sides of the debate currently under way:

There are worlds within worlds in Second Life, and while some choose to take to the air as dragons or dive deep underwater to live as merfolk, others in Second Life recreate reality and explore phenomenon that may play a tangential role in our daily lives but fascinate us nonetheless – as we discovered on the latest episode of Designing Worlds, when we set out to discover the fascinating world of civil aviation – now available on the web.

We meet some of those involved in the world of civil aviation – MarkTwain White, owner of the extremely popular Hollywood Airport – an airport that is busier than LAX (Los Angeles’ main airport); Ereck Gregan, the owner and designer of EG aircraft which produces – among many others – the iconic Concorde; and Howdy Coulter, owner and designer of CoulterCraft and the proprietor of Colter Air – an airline with a complete system of pre-flight checks – including re-fuelling and loading baggage!

And many thanks to Cybere Placebo of Archachon who provided some awesome simultaneous translation for us!

Join us at 2pm SLT today, Monday 21st October, for Designing Worlds at our studio in Garden of Dreams, as we take a look at the fascinating phenomenon of civil aviation in Second Life.

You may have taken to the skies yourself in Second Life, and you may have seen and heard military dogfights or seen amazing vintage aircraft flying overhead.

But did you realise that there are airports in Second Life that are busier than LAX (Los Angeles main airport)? Did you know there are airlines that will fly you to fixed destinations, operating on a timetable (and loading your baggage while they refuel)?  And that there are aircraft manufacturers out there who supply amazing planes and airport owners, traffic controllers … a complete infrastructure to support civil aviation?

Watch today’s Designing Worlds show, and finds out all about it!

When Designing Worlds visited the virtual model of the City of Birmingham Library, they discovered a fascinating use for virtual worlds – and worrying reasons why Second Life might not be the best virtual environment for this type of project any more.

#DW213 The Library of Birmingham – Oct 14th 2013 from Saffia Widdershins on Vimeo.

Back in 2009, the City of Birmingham in England wanted to create an immersive online version of their planned city centre library. They turned to the company Daden Limited to realise their concept.  This became a valuable tool in the creation of what is now a magnificent building in the heart of the real life city.

Together with David Burden of Daden, we will be exploring the library, the interactive tools that were created for discovering people’s responses, the training processes that were created – and learning how the librarians and other people responded to this.

And we’ll also be talking to David about why he feels that Second Life is no longer the best environment for creating such projects.  He makes some serious and very valid points – you won’t want to miss this!
