The latest episode of Designing Worlds – as we explore the new user experience created by Linden Lab – is now on the web.

We were accompanied by Patch Linden and a large group of Moles (Second Life residents who work from the Linden Department of Public Works) and Lindens responsible for developing and testing areas of Second Life like this. They gave us special access to Learning Island – something that you would normally need to be a new resident to visit. We saw the track that has been created for new residents to follow and discussed with Patch and the Moles how this has been developed.

Then we visited Social Island, created as part of the pathway for new residents. This is open to old as well as new residents, and we explored some of the elements on offer, such as a game to test camera skills, stores to buy items (with special currency earned by completing the games). And we discussed some of the problems that have arisen with previous iterations of the process, and how they might be avoided this time.

It makes for an interesting show for anyone who cares about developing retention in Second Life – or who wants to see how the new user experience is developing.
