The latest episode of this season of Designing Worlds, for The Ghost of the Bridge, a special show for Halloween, with a story written by Judith Cullen (known as Caledonia Skytower in Second Life)., is now on the web!

DW382 – Ghost of the Bridge from Richard Elen on Vimeo.

Set in Luxembourg (and filmed in the beautiful Luxembourg 1867 regions), we learn about the mishaps of Max, a young man with a loving wife, a storytelling friend, an unfortunate taste for alcohol … and perhaps too vivid an imagination!

Elrik Merlin, Corwyn Allen, Mavromichali Szondi and Caledonia Skytower tell the story, which is illustrated by images created by Wildstar Beaumont under the direction of Aisling Sinclair, and featuring Maxwell Grantly as Max, Dev Vaughn as Thierry, with Conn Munroe as Roland and Eloisa Denimore as Mariette. Other parts were played by the residents of Pfaffenthal (part of Luxembourg 1867), the Second Life Cheerleaders Squad and Designing Worlds fans.

Designing Worlds discusses "original mesh"

Designing Worlds discusses “original mesh”

The latest episode of this season of Designing Worlds, a very special show as we talk about original mesh, and designers discuss the process and challenges. , is now on the web!

We are joined by Eku Zhong of Culprit Furniture, Kaerri Rae of Kaerri, Isla Gealach of Cheeky Pea and Reven Rosca of Meshopotamia and AlsoKnownAs who share their very different experiences and abilities. There are fascinating displays too – with Eku showing us how materials can be used in creating products,

DW381 – Original Mesh from Richard Elen on Vimeo.

We explore basic questions such as what is mesh and how is it different from the early forms of Second Life design – prims and sculpties. We talk about full perm mesh and mesh templates imported from third party sites – and how that can be abused. We look at collaboration in the process of designing, and the art of “assemblage”, drawing elements from different – and legitimate – sources. We’ll be talking about why such a premium is placed on what is called “original mesh” – mesh produced exclusively for specific objects in Second Life.

And we’ll be asking our guests why such a premium is placed on “original mesh” when there is not the same pressure on textures or animations.

Join us at 2pm SLT today, Monday 8th October for Designing Worlds at our studio in Garden of Dreams in Second Life, as we revisit a popular show from the past.

This wasn’t meant to happen … but unfortunately, we had a major technical issue (Saffia’s headset died) and we weren’t able to film.

But we have a great few shows coming up …

October 15th – Halloween Places
October 22nd – Is Original Mesh a Big Deal?
October 29th – A Ghostly Halloween Tale – with a special story by Judith Cullen

So for today … we invite you to explore Arkansas Heritage – a show from back in 2011 which explored a fascinating series of builds created by Painter Meriman for Arkansas State University.

We explored a really fascinating social history project, learning not only about Johnny Cash’s boyhood home, but also about the New Deal community of Dyess and the Southern Tenant Farmers Union (which now houses the Southern Tenant Famers Museum).

You can join our viewing party in our studio on Garden of Dreams, or watch it at home!

The latest episode of this season of Designing Worlds – the first episode of our autumn/fall season, where we take a look at the story behind ARRIVALS & DEPARTURES, the 15-minute machinima produced by Caledonia Skytower, Honey Heart and our very own Elrik Merlin, is now on the web!

DW379 – The Making of ‘Arrivals & Departures’ from Richard Elen on Vimeo.

Saffia Widdershins and guest co-host Corwyn Allen talk to the film-makers about how the production came about and how it was made, in the special theatre created by Honey Heart for the premiere; and we talk to Marcus Inkpen of in-world creators The Looking Glass who produced the build, Erstwhile Station, in which the story is set.

ARRIVALS & DEPARTURES is a 15-minute machinima shot in Second Life®, based on a short story written as part of Fantasy Faire 2018, the tenth annual virtual world-based fund-raiser for the American Cancer Society.

Arrivals and Departures poster

Arrivals and Departures poster

ARRIVALS & DEPARTURES presents a glimpse into two individual journeys that are brought together and shared one last time, in a story set in a vibrant, steampunk-inspired, fantasy environment. As the action transitions from a public encounter into a more personal, private exchange, the film highlights the vital importance of storytelling, harking back to an earlier time when tales were woven into a verbal tradition that was handed down by word of mouth.

Though the word is never uttered in the film, it addresses aspects of our attitudes towards death. Interwoven within is a reminder that while those who leave us pass beyond our reach, we may continue to carry them within us, breathing life into their passions and ideals, by teaching what we have learned from them, and inspiring others.
