Today is one of our Archive shows, falling between our two visits to the Home and Garden Expo. And it seemed rather appropriate to look back to September 2013 to visit the beautiful Case Study Homes homage, created by Painter Meriman.

Join us today, Monday 28th March 2022 at 2pm SLT in our beautiful studio in Garden of Dreams, or watch the show on the web, either here on the blog or on Vimeo at https://vimeo.com/693169755.

The Case Study Houses were experiments in American residential architecture sponsored by Arts & Architecture magazine, which commissioned major architects of the day to design and build inexpensive and efficient model homes for the United States residential housing boom caused by the end of World War II and the return of millions of soldiers. The core idea of a Case Study house was to hypothesize a modern household, elaborate its functional requirements, have an esteemed architect develop a design that met those requirements using modern materials and construction processes, and then to actually build the home. The houses were documented before, during and after construction for publication in Arts & Architecture.

Painter has created homages to two of these houses (both of which still exist in Pacific Palisades), the Entenza House (Case Study House No. 9) and the Eames House (Case Study House No.8). We will be looking at the buildings, and talking about the background to the Case Study Houses project – as well as taking a look at how this has inspired Painter’s latest home.

It makes for a really fascinating show – so do come and watch it at 2pm!

Sadly, the Case Study Homes are no longer inworld. But some of Painter’s beautiful builds remain on Dagger Bay, owned by Jaysun Dagger.

Jaysun writes:
We invite you to visit the beautiful Village of the Beguinage of Bruges and surrounding countryside. Please enjoy a walk on the forest path or relax in the coffee house along the canal with a snack or something to drink.

In this episode, Designing Worlds visited the Second Life Home and Garden Expo, an annual event we have supported since 2009.

In this show we talk to the organiser of the Expo – Kaerri Rae, and learn about various aspects of the event. We look at some of the great international-themed builds we saw at the Expo this year, with a film from Bain Finch, while Wildstar Beaumont shares photographs of some of the amazing gardens and landscaping that was on display. And we meet up with DaveOSaurus to take a look at Waffleville, the community area for tinies and dinkies.

Designing Worlds sponsored the Home and Garden Decorating Contest, and in this episode we take a look at the undecorated homes (thanks to Wildstar’s pictures!). We’ll be showing you what the decorated homes looked like in our second Homes and Garden Expo show – to be shown in two weeks time.

And finally we will the Lantern Ceremony, held every day at 4pm, a time for reflection and remembrance.

The Expo is finished now, but you can read more about it here: https://slhomeandgardenexpo.wordpress.com/
