In this episode, we pay the second of our two visits to Fantasy Faire 2020 in aid of Relay for Life of Second Life.

DW418 – Fantasy Faire 2020 Part 2 from Richard Elen on Vimeo.

We talk to Aisling Sinclair, who is in charge of the famous and fabulous Fairelands Quest, and Fantasy Faire Co-Founder and Co-Captain Zander Greene about this year’s Faire, and what the running of an event like the Faire involves.

And we take a look around the eighteen regions of the Faire – nine through excursions by Elrik Merlin and his camera, and the other nine through the beautiful photographic images captured by Wildstar Beaumont!

Fantasy Faire 2011, photographed by PJ Trenton

This week on Monday 13th April at 2pm SLT, as excitement grows for THIS year’s Fantasy Faire, we are taking a look back to our very first Fantasy Faire show, back in 2011!

Unavailable on the web for a number of years, it recently found a home on our new Archive channel (which is full of goodies!).

#122 Fantasy Faire – 4th April 2011 from Saffia Widdershins on Vimeo.

You can watch it on this blog, and you can also see the show on the Designing Worlds Archive Vimeo channel at: https://vimeo.com/373068686. And you can join the special Watch Party (also at 2pm SLT) in our studio on Garden of Dreams.

This is what we said in 2011:

“Today Designing Worlds will be visiting Fantasy Faire and sharing with you some of the amazing regions that make up the Faire! So prepare for fantastic elven woodlands, for lakes of chocolate, for delicately texture dark mysteries, for seas that lure mermaids, and for steampunk fantasies beyond your wildest dreams! And we’ll be learning all about the Faire and the entertainments that it is offering for visitors, as well as about how the hunt has achieved its wonderful, magical appearance – and about some of the designers who have worked so hard to make it happen.”

The annual Fantasy Faire was, in 2011, a 9-sim extravaganza celebration with a slant toward elves, fairies, dragons, mermaids plus many more role playing fans. The 10 day event featured some amazing and impressive builds to visit and was, as ever, part of the Relay For Life in SL campaign to benefit the American Cancer Society.

We don’t have time to show you all the regions – but you will be able to see some awesome photos, taken by the talented Mr PJ Trenton, of the Faire as a whole.

If you want to learn more about the amazing individual regions at the Faire in 2011, follow Beq Janus’s daily posts on the Prim Perfect blog!

After the show, Saffia was captured and placed in jail to raise funds for Relay for Life.  Despite valiant efforts by friendly dragons to free her, she was held fast until she posted bail of L$50,000!

There will be more news to come very soon about THIS year’s 18 region Fantasy Faire. In the mean-time, do take a look at the Fantasy Faire website at: https://fantasyfairesl.wordpress.com/

We’ve been covering the eminent closure of the Linden Endowment for the Arts (LEA) at the end of August, and now the plans to save it in a redeveloped form. Today’s Designing Worlds feature-length episode – the last in our current season – pays a final visit to the LEA in its current form, and looks back at some of the fascinating projects and installations that have appeared there over the years.

The show goes live on Monday 29th July at 2pm SLT on the Designing Worlds Vimeo channel, on the Designing Worlds channel at SLArtist – and you can join the special Watch Party (also at 2pm SLT) in our studio on Garden of Dreams.

SL16B, photographed by Wildstar Beaumont

SL16B, photographed by Wildstar Beaumont

In this episode, we pay the second of two visits to the Second Life 16th Community Birthday Celebration, or SL16B for short.

The show goes live on Monday 22nd July at 2pm SLT on the Designing Worlds Vimeo channel, on the Designing Worlds channel at SLArtist – and you can join the special Watch Party (also at 2pm SLT) in our studio on Garden of Dreams.

In this show, we visit some of the major Mole-built installations, such as the Welcome Area, the Main Stage and the Tapestry of Time. In addition we check out the latest in Linden Homes – the campers and trailers.

Tapestry of Time at SL16B, photographed by Wildstar Beaumont

These will be set out as part of the new (and rapidly growing) continent for new Linden Homes, but they have a very different landscape setting from the new houseboats and traditional homes. These have a more rustic, mountainous setting with more of a vacation feel and – on the individual 512 plots, the accommodation itself takes up far less space. Patch Linden told me that the idea was to encourage residents to create more outdoor activities – barbecues and campfires, as well as outdoor sports. And there will be lakes for boating … swimming … maybe fishing?

The new camper and trailer Linden Homes at Sl16B, photographed by Wildstar Beaumont

It does strike me that these could be ideal Linden Homes for people who already have a nice home elsewhere in Second Life, but who would like to get away for the weekend!

Anyway, we’ll be taking a closer look at Linden Homes next season … let’s get back to the Birthday!

The Four Bridges Project at Sl16B, photographed by Wildstar Beaumont

Because we also visit some resident builds, including a botanical laboratory in space with a mystery story of its own (yes, it’s another great Loki Eliot build!). Then DNA Café, because of course, following the 1950s theme, the 1950s was the decade when the secrets of DNA were first discovered by Crick, Watson, Franklin and Wilkins. There’s the fascinating Four Bridges Project which, for SL16B, shares the story of Dooky Chase’s Restaurant. And we also visit a miniature replica of the UN Building created for the SL Newser team by Silvia Ametz, which is a very clever optical illusion! Finally, we explore a world of dragons and tinies, and catch up with the latest from the Isle of Wyrms – but sadly no dragon raids on a giant cake this year!

As you can see, we have a fascinating and packed show for you today – make sure you don’t miss it by tuning in or joining us at 2pm SLT.

While Saffia is away in the auditorium presenting interviews with various leading Lindens, our Director Aisling Sinclair joins Elrik Merlin for some excursions around the many regions and builds. This year, the theme (it being the 16th Birthday of Second Life) is “Sweet Sixteen”, inferring, perhaps paradoxically, a 1950s feel.

We start at the beautiful retro televsion studio that was created for Designing Worlds by undercoverlady. Then we’ll enjoy some Non-Profit Commons ice creams; take one of Yavanna Llanfair’s always enjoyable Pod Car Tours of the site; visit LitFest, a little bit of Fantasy Faire at SL16B which looks at some of the great fantasy novels that were first published in the 1950s; and take a look at a remarkable installation created by Pokofy Neva that highlights a darker period in the 1950s – one that is seemingly almost forgotten today – the Korean War.
