In our most recent episode of Designing Worlds, we visited Burn2 2020, the annual Second Life celebration and impromptu art festival that parallels the Burning Man festival usually held in the Black Rock Desert in Nevada every year.

DW425 – Burn2 2020 from Richard Elen on Vimeo.

Originally begun as “Burning Life” by Linden Lab, several of whom were “Burners” in real life, the community-run festival is now called Burn2 and is a fully authorised regional Burning Man event.

This year Burn2 has been particularly important as the real-life Burning Man festival was cancelled due to Covid-19 and instead has been held virtually, with Burn2 being the most extensive and longest-established. As a result there has been a significant influx of real-life Burners into Burn2, often bringing unique art exhibits and general zaniness with them.

In this feature-length episode we talk to organisers and exhibitors at this year’s Burn2, Supersuz, DJ Puddles, Fifi Oh, Holocluck Henley and Freia Guillaume.

We also visit some of the exhibits, and take a look at the philosophy behind the festival.

In addition, Saffia sets out to take a balloon ride – but finds a much more exciting mount! And we catch the Lamplighters, the Burning of the Temple, and the Burning of the Man himself.

Saffia was unwell for the filming of this episode, so Elrik is joined by our old friend Caledonia Skytower. to explore the art and the iconic events that form essential parts of the Festival. We talk to artists and organisers, and we also have footage of the amazing Burns themselves – the Man Burn and the Temple Burn, with extracts from the dances of the Lamplighters.

The latest episode of Designing Worlds – a visit to the amazing Second Life art festival, Burn 2, the inworld realisation of the famous Burning Man Festival held annually in the Nevada desert. – is now on the web.

DW288 – Burn2 2015 from Richard Elen on Vimeo.

We take a look at this fascinating event, and talk to some of the artists involved: Mrs. Mia Wallace, who gives us a guided tour, Jennifer Steele, Kerryth Tarantal and Leondra Larsson. We also meet our old friend Toady Nakamura of Grendels, who this year created the temple, and she explains how it is a tribute to Lumiere Noir, the much loved creator of that superb building resource, the Tower of Prims, and who died unexpectedly earlier this year.

Join Designing Worlds at 2pm today, Monday 2nd November at our studio in Garden of Dreams, as we explore the amazing art of Burn2!.

There are many art installations and even festivals in Second Life but perhaps none is as anarchic as Burn2, the invworld realisation of the famous Burning Man Festival held annually in the Nevada desert.

And yet this event is governed by protocols and customs to a fascinating degree, whether it is by the guiding principles of Burn2, or by the rituals such as the creation – and burning – of the Man and of the Temple, the decorated porta-potties, the mutated vehicles, the lamplighter processions.

We take a look at this fascinating event, and talk to some of the artists involved: Mrs. Mia Wallace, who gives us a guided tour, Jennifer Steele, Kerryth Tarantal and Leondra Larsson.

Burn2 - an overview - photograph by Wildstar Beaumont

Burn2 – an overview – photograph by Wildstar Beaumont

Join us at 2pm SLT today, Monday 12th November, for the new episode of Designing Worlds at our studio in Garden of Dreams. Last month we took our cameras to the amazing Burn2, the annual art festival which is, of course, inspired by the Burning Man Festival, held annually in the Nevada desert – and today’s show is the outcome of what we found there!

We travel from the entance (based on the real life entrance in the Balck Rock desert) to visit the Burning Man, the temple – and some of the stunning installations on display – including something very green to find in a desert!

The theme was fertility … and we think you’ll be fascinated to see what the various artists have made of that!

All in all, this is a very beautiful show – make sure that you don’t miss it! So do come and join us at 2pm!
