In this, our 400th episode (!) of Designing Worlds, we paid our second of three visits to Fantasy Faire 2019.

DW400 – Fantasy Faire 2019 Part II from Richard Elen on Vimeo.

We spoke to the Faire organiser Zander Greene, who talked about the project the Faire was fund-raising for this year – the Kenyatta National Hospital Hope Lodge in Nairobi, Kenya – as well as discussing the Fantasy Faire Radio region, The Celestial Plain, and the many events that were staged there.

We also visited Bayounimba and talked to Stevie Basevi, who headed the Roleplay activities at the Faire about the different groups that were involved along with related activities in the region.

Then finally, we talked to Aisling Sinclair, who organised the Quest – The Lair of Lantoris – for the Faire this year, and Thornfast, the region in which it took place.

In addition we take flythroughs of several regions including The Shrine Tree by The Looking Glass.

In this week’s Designing Worlds, we visited the wonderful 24 hour event that was One Billion Rising 2019.

DW392 – One Billion Rising in Second Life 2019 from Richard Elen on Vimeo.

On February 14, 2019, women and men in Second Life joined people across the world to Rise as a show of unity, individual strength, and the need for change. The event featured a four-region stage where 200 people could dance together, surrounded by an area of art installations and informational exhibits.

This year the One Billion Rising event continued last year’s theme – we RISE in Solidarity Against the Exploitation of Women in a world where governments and leaders seem to be increasingly anti-women. And we also had a special tribute to the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize laureates – Denis Mukwege and Nadia Murad – for their work against sexual violence as a weapon of war.

As in previous years, we asked a variety of performers to play over the 24-hour period, which let people all over the world attend the event no matter their timezone. The regions had a General maturity rating to allow all residents an opportunity to participate.

This programme documents OBR in SL 2019 and includes interviews with leading contributors and co-creators.
