SL17B Welcome Area, photographed by Wildstar Beaumont

Today, Monday 13th July, Designing Worlds is paying the first of two visits to the Second Life Seventeenth Birthday Community Celebration (SL17B). This time, we’ll be looking at the Linden builds; in the next show, we’ll be looking at resident builds – just a few, because there were so many wonderful ones! But we’ll be seeing a sneak preview of those resident builds with a slideshow from Wildstar Beaumont in this show.

Join us at 2pm  when you can see the show on the Designing Worlds Vimeo channel at: https://vimeo.com/channels/dworlds and on the Designing Worlds channel at SLArtist at: https://www.slartist.com/browse-dw-videos-1-date.html. Or join us for our Watch Party in the Designing Worlds studios at 2pm SLT.

In this show, we check out some of the key areas like the Welcome Area, the Tapestry of Time, the Auditorium, the Main Stage and the DJ Stage; we preview the latest Linden Homes – and we take a look at the sky. Why? Because of a special Linden Lab feature – known as EEP – Environmental Enhancement Project.

The special EEP sky. photographed by Wildstar Beaumont

We also visited the gift area and the Hop and Shop area – an amazing shopping arcade that wasn’t actually part of the main Celebration area – but very tempting! We even visit a dinosaur park and, of course, we can’t resist a podcar trip!

This year, the theme for the Birthday was vacations and road trips, and many of the exhibits were wish-fulfilment for people who were pretty much in lockdown while they were building. In the Linden builds too there are many elements of vacations – with the stages having a lovely holiday feel.

It all makes for a fascinating show – so do tune in or join us at 2pm SLT at the Watch Party in Garden of Dreams!

The SL17B regions will be open until Sunday July 19th – so you still have time to visit! The Welcome Area is a good place to start – or grab a pod car straight away!

Today, Monday 29th June, we present a feature-length episode visiting the very special area that was created to host the campsites, designer regions and more that made up the Relay for Life of Second Life weekend: 6–7 June 2020.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Relay for Life of Second Life was one of the few Relay For Life events able to be held, thanks to it being held in a virtual world. And it was a fantastic success, raising Linden$: 76,317,509, which is the equivalent of USD: $305,270.00 – a really amazing sum!

The theme was Game On, Cancer! and it led to the creation of some spectacular designer regions and team campsites following the theme of different types of games and sports – as we learn in the show.

We talk to two of the core organisers of the event, Stingray Raymaker, Director of the American Cancer Society in Second Life, and the Ambassador to the American Cancer Society, the charity behind Relay for Life; and Nikki Mathieson, Executive Leadership Team for the American Cancer Society in Second Life.

We also talk to Mightbe Shelter, a member of one of the teams of SL motorcycle clubs who built daunting race tracks and other thrilling activities – and we experience a little of the moving Luminaria ceremony.

We also take a look at some of the regions involved in the Ten Days of Relay run-up to Relay Weekend itself, visit several of the designer regions and campsites, and view some stunning slideshows of the regions from our star photographer, Wildstar Beaumont.

It all makes for a beautiful and fascinating show – so do tune in or join us at 2pm SLT at the Watch Party in Garden of Dreams!

Ebbe Londen in conversation

Ebbe Londen in conversation

Today’s Designing Worlds show will be rather different as rather than show an episode from our archives, Saffia will be speaking live at 2pm to Ebbe Linden, CEO of Linden Lab, as part of the SL17B Birthday Celebrations – and we’d love the Designing Worlds audience to be there!

You can join the live audience at the Auditorium on at the Celebration. The Auditorium is open in three areas – but do get there early – last year it filled up fast!

Or you will be able to see the event livestreamed at: https://youtu.be/quloVw0OVj8

The Auditorium

The Auditorium

Ebbe Altberg came to Linden Lab with more than 25 years of experience leading teams and creating software used by hundreds of millions of users. After graduating from Middlebury College he went on to work at Microsoft, where he spent most of his 12 years leading teams that created the world’s most popular productivity products such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Office.

Saffia will be talking to him about a range of topics, including the impact of Covid-19 on Second Life, issues of diversity and equality, the situation with Sansar and the economics of Second Life – as well as what we can look forward to in 2020.

And there will be further Meet the Lindens events all week!

  • Tuesday 23rd at 2pm SLT: Patch Linden – VP of Product Operations at Linden Lab
  • Wednesday 24th at 2pm SLT: Oz Linden – Head of Engineering at Linden Lab
  • Thursday 25th at 2pm SLT: Marketing Team (Brett, Darcy, Strawberry, Maveric, and Tara Linden) at Linden Lab
  • Friday 26th at 2pm SLT: Meet the Moles (Linden Department of Public Works)

Don’t miss a new special chance to learn more about the Lindens, with a new series in the Second Life Community Forums, created by Strawberry Linden: https://community.secondlife.com/forums/topic/456100-sl17b-meet-the-employees-social-campaign

Designing Worlds exhibit at SL17B

Designing Worlds exhibit at SL17B

We have a beautiful site at the Second Life 17th Birthday celebrations!

Designed by Annie aka Undercoverlady, it has Designing Worlds out on a road trip in a beautiful bit of countryside.  You’ll find areas high and low to explore, even underwater! And there are some quiet corners to relax or even enjoy a picnic.

One of the collectible Designing Worlds postcards at SL17B

One of the collectible Designing Worlds postcards at SL17B

And because the theme of this Birthday is roadtrips and vacations, the Designing Worlds team have been busy sending postcards too! Inside the cute little figures you’ll find around the exhibit, there are a whole range of postcards, with messages from Saffia, Elrik, Aisling and Wildstar, with each card being from one of the amazing places we have visited on the web. On the reverse side, you’ll find a message from one of us – and each card also has a link to the show featured on the postcard!

See how many you can collect – each click on the figures will give you a free random postcard. You can collect and keep them all – or gift them to friends.

The Telethon Studio from Treet at RFL 2009

The Telethon Studio from Treet at RFL 2009

This last weekend saw the fantastic Relay for Life of Second Life weekend, the culmination of a wildly successful RFL season. We will be looking at that in more detail on the show in a few weeks … but this week, Monday 8th June at 2pm SLT, we are taking a look back to the builds of the Relay for Life weekend all the way back in 2009!

Unavailable on the web for a number of years, it recently found a home on our new Archive channel (which is full of goodies!).

#051 The Builds of Relay for Life: 21 July 2009 from Saffia Widdershins on Vimeo.

You can watch it on this blog, and you can also see the show on the Designing Worlds Archive Vimeo channel at: https://vimeo.com/371357132. And you can join the special Watch Party (at 2pm SLT) in our studio on Garden of Dreams.

The New Babbage Exposition at RFL 2009

The New Babbage Exposition at RFL 2009

And it was a classic year for great builds: from the New Babbage team we saw the exploration of Mars, and an imagining of an Exposition Universalle, based upon that of 1889 in Paris when the Eiffel Tower was first revealed; we visited the Elf Circle, the Wonders of the World region, and we finished at Anatomica, the most amazing region, which combined information and a great interactive learning experience about the physiology of cells and cancer – with a fast and furious game where you got to dress in a red suit for surfing the bloodstream and blast cancer cells yourself!

It is a fascinating show – so do come and join us at 2pm at our studio on Garden of Dreams.

SL16B, photographed by Wildstar Beaumont

In this episode, we paid the second of two visits to the Second Life 16th Community Birthday Celebration, or SL16B for short.

DW404 – SL16B Part2 from Richard Elen on Vimeo.

We visited some of the major Mole-built installations, such as the Welcome Area, the Main Stage and the Tapestry of Time. In addition we checked out the latest in Linden Homes – the campers and trailers.

The new camper and trailer Linden Homes at Sl16B, photographed by Wildstar Beaumont

These will be set out as part of the new (and rapidly growing) continent for new Linden Homes, but they have a very different landscape setting from the new houseboats and traditional homes. These have a more rustic, mountainous setting with more of a vacation feel and – on the individual 512 plots, the accommodation itself takes up far less space. Patch Linden told me that the idea was to encourage residents to create more outdoor activities – barbecues and campfires, as well as outdoor sports. And there will be lakes for boating … swimming … maybe fishing?

Space Explored by Loki Eliot at Sl16B, photographed by Wildstar Beaumont

We also visit some resident builds, including a botanical laboratory in space with a mystery story of its own (yes, it’s another great Loki Eliot build!). Then DNA Café, because of course, following the 1950s theme, the 1950s was the decade when the secrets of DNA were first discovered by Crick, Watson, Franklin and Wilkins.

The DNA Cafe at Sl16B, photographed by Wildstar Beaumont

There’s the fascinating Four Bridges Project which, for SL16B, shares the story of Dooky Chase’s Restaurant. And we also visit a miniature replica of the UN Building created for the SL Newser team by Silvia Ametz, which is a very clever optical illusion! Finally, we explore a world of dragons and tinies, and catch up with the latest from the Isle of Wyrms – but sadly no dragon raids on a giant cake this year!
