Designing Worlds exhibit at SL17B

Designing Worlds exhibit at SL17B

We have a beautiful site at the Second Life 17th Birthday celebrations!

Designed by Annie aka Undercoverlady, it has Designing Worlds out on a road trip in a beautiful bit of countryside.  You’ll find areas high and low to explore, even underwater! And there are some quiet corners to relax or even enjoy a picnic.

And because the theme of this Birthday is roadtrips and vacations, the Designing Worlds team have been busy sending postcards too! Inside the cute little figures you’ll find around the exhibit, there are a whole range of postcards, with messages from Saffia, Elrik, Aisling and Wildstar, with each card being from one of the amazing places we have visited on the web. On the reverse side, you’ll find a message from one of us – and each card also has a link to the show featured on the postcard!

See how many you can collect – each click on the figures will give you a free random postcard. You can collect and keep them all – or gift them to friends.

And, if you can, try and visit other sites we’ve been involved with:

The Telethon Studio from Treet at RFL 2009

The Telethon Studio from Treet at RFL 2009

This last weekend saw the fantastic Relay for Life of Second Life weekend, the culmination of a wildly successful RFL season. We will be looking at that in more detail on the show in a few weeks … but this week, Monday 8th June at 2pm SLT, we are taking a look back to the builds of the Relay for Life weekend all the way back in 2009!

Unavailable on the web for a number of years, it recently found a home on our new Archive channel (which is full of goodies!).

#051 The Builds of Relay for Life: 21 July 2009 from Saffia Widdershins on Vimeo.

You can watch it on this blog, and you can also see the show on the Designing Worlds Archive Vimeo channel at: https://vimeo.com/371357132. And you can join the special Watch Party (at 2pm SLT) in our studio on Garden of Dreams.

The New Babbage Exposition at RFL 2009

The New Babbage Exposition at RFL 2009

And it was a classic year for great builds: from the New Babbage team we saw the exploration of Mars, and an imagining of an Exposition Universalle, based upon that of 1889 in Paris when the Eiffel Tower was first revealed; we visited the Elf Circle, the Wonders of the World region, and we finished at Anatomica, the most amazing region, which combined information and a great interactive learning experience about the physiology of cells and cancer – with a fast and furious game where you got to dress in a red suit for surfing the bloodstream and blast cancer cells yourself!

Anatomica at RFL 2009

It is a fascinating show – so do come and join us at 2pm at our studio on Garden of Dreams.

In this episode, we pay the second of our two visits to Fantasy Faire 2020 in aid of Relay for Life of Second Life.

DW418 – Fantasy Faire 2020 Part 2 from Richard Elen on Vimeo.

We talk to Aisling Sinclair, who is in charge of the famous and fabulous Fairelands Quest, and Fantasy Faire Co-Founder and Co-Captain Zander Greene about this year’s Faire, and what the running of an event like the Faire involves.

Lunafae, photographed by Wildstar Beaumont

And we take a look around the eighteen regions of the Faire – nine through excursions by Elrik Merlin and his camera, and the other nine through the beautiful photographic images captured by Wildstar Beaumont!

In this, our final new episode for 2019, we explore Winter Wonderlands around the grid with a special trip to the Christmas Expo for Relay for Life!

DW412 – SL Winter Places 2019 from Richard Elen on Vimeo.

We visit the Christmas Expo to see the stores and designs there, and take a sleigh ride with Trader Whiplash and Nuala Maracas to see the Lights of Hope – houses decorated for Christmas by the designers – and also tour the Linden Lights of Hope – which were houses decorated by the Lindens and the Moles (tinies – look out for the waffle mountain and syrup lake at 25.37).

Santa Town

We also visit some of the fabulous Winter Places on show in Second Life, including Russian fairytale-like Warm Angel and the recreation of the Austrian town of Gosau created by two real-life farmers who live in the area, and the Bells of Rhymney which mixes a Rivendell-like atmosphere with Baroque architecture.

SL16B, photographed by Wildstar Beaumont

In this episode, we paid the second of two visits to the Second Life 16th Community Birthday Celebration, or SL16B for short.

DW404 – SL16B Part2 from Richard Elen on Vimeo.

We visited some of the major Mole-built installations, such as the Welcome Area, the Main Stage and the Tapestry of Time. In addition we checked out the latest in Linden Homes – the campers and trailers.

These will be set out as part of the new (and rapidly growing) continent for new Linden Homes, but they have a very different landscape setting from the new houseboats and traditional homes. These have a more rustic, mountainous setting with more of a vacation feel and – on the individual 512 plots, the accommodation itself takes up far less space. Patch Linden told me that the idea was to encourage residents to create more outdoor activities – barbecues and campfires, as well as outdoor sports. And there will be lakes for boating … swimming … maybe fishing?

We also visit some resident builds, including a botanical laboratory in space with a mystery story of its own (yes, it’s another great Loki Eliot build!). Then DNA Café, because of course, following the 1950s theme, the 1950s was the decade when the secrets of DNA were first discovered by Crick, Watson, Franklin and Wilkins.

There’s the fascinating Four Bridges Project which, for SL16B, shares the story of Dooky Chase’s Restaurant. And we also visit a miniature replica of the UN Building created for the SL Newser team by Silvia Ametz, which is a very clever optical illusion! Finally, we explore a world of dragons and tinies, and catch up with the latest from the Isle of Wyrms – but sadly no dragon raids on a giant cake this year!

It does strike me that these could be ideal Linden Homes for people who already have a nice home elsewhere in Second Life, but who would like to get away for the weekend!

Anyway, we’ll be taking a closer look at Linden Homes next season … let’s get back to the Birthday!

In this episode of Designing Worlds, we paid the first of two visits to the Second Life 16th Community Birthday Celebration, or SL16B for short.

DW403 – SL16B Part1 from Richard Elen on Vimeo.

While Saffia is away in the auditorium presenting interviews with various leading Lindens, our Director Aisling Sinclair joins Elrik Merlin for some excursions around the many regions and builds. This year, the theme (it being the 16th Birthday of Second Life) is “Sweet Sixteen”, inferring, perhaps paradoxically, a 1950s feel.

We start at the beautiful retro televsion studio that was created for Designing Worlds by undercoverlady. Then we’ll enjoy some Non-Profit Commons ice creams; take one of Yavanna Llanfair’s always enjoyable Pod Car Tours of the site; visit LitFest, a little bit of Fantasy Faire at SL16B which looks at some of the great fantasy novels that were first published in the 1950s; and take a look at a remarkable installation created by Pokofy Neva that highlights a darker period in the 1950s – one that is seemingly almost forgotten today – the Korean War.
