Join us today, Monday 14th June 2021 at 2pm SLT in our beautiful studio in Garden of Dreams as we journey back into the past for a show first shown in October 2014, when we explored one of the oldest and largest of the mainland communities – the East River Community.

You can watch it on this blog, and you can also see the show on the Designing Worlds Vimeo channel at: https://vimeo.com/108461315. And you can join the special Watch Party at 2pm SLT in our studio on Garden of Dreams.

The East River community is located on the Sansara Continent, just to the North of the Sea of Fables, and it’s a remarkable place – and a remarkable achievement too.

Because what makes this community so fascinating is that it’s not – like many close communities – part of an island estate, privately owned and managed with a Covenant to make sure that there is consistency. No, this is a mainland community, created by residents coming together and protecting a tract of land that now covers nineteen sims, all brought together as the East River Community.

With the assistance of a longtime resident, Drewski Northman, we explore some of the residential and commercial areas, the art that forms an important part of the community, and some of the amazing transportation systems that link the community,

This is a fascinating show about an aspect of Second Life that many people remain unaware of – the rich potential of mainland living – don’t miss it!

Like so many in Second Life, the Designing Worlds team were greatly saddened to learn this weekend of the passing of Ebbe Altberg, known on the Second Life grid as Ebbe Linden. Elrik and Saffia were fortunate enough to be able to interview Ebbe on a number of occasions, both with Designing Worlds, and with Saffia’s annual “Meet the Lindens” talks at the Second Life Birthdays.

Ebbe was a wonderful guest to talk to – and always willing to share ideas and plans for Second Life. In today’s Archive show, we look back to the very first interview we did with him, back in 2014. You can see it on this blog, or watch it directly on Vimeo at: https://vimeo.com/107624666. You can also join the Watch Party at 2pm SLT Monday June 7th in our studio on Garden of Dreams, where we are sure there will be lots of discussion about Ebbe and his contributions, in so many ways, to Second Life.

Ebbe arrived at the Lab in February 2014, at what was a low point in the Lab’s fortunes. From the heady early days when the Lab, residents and the grid had grown together, a widening division became perceived between the Lab and the residents. Lindens were no longer allowed to go on the grid and socialize with residents; residents increasingly felt that the Lab didn’t “get them” or their needs and desires (having said that – the Lab is such a multifarious place that it would be difficult for anyone to “get” everything!). There seemed to be an animosity of both sides that made many people very sad.

Ebbe came in – and was like a breath of fresh air. Suddenly, Lindens were back on the grid. The team was smaller as Sansar was developed – but the amount of content and new innovations grew amazingly. And best of all, the closed doors were opened – and residents were allowed to share in the ideas and plans for the future. The enthusiasm of the team working on the Second Life grid seemed power-charged, with the Bellisseria Homes, the development of material, the Bento project, animesh .. and much more. This all came to fruition on Ebbe’s watch – and a reason why, when the pandemic struck, Second Life was in such a healthy place to welcome back old friends and new.

He not only made changes to the infrastructure – he made changes to the culture of Second Life – and that in a time of darkness, when many despaired of the real world around us. Under Ebbe’s leadership, Second Life became a place of hope for a better world.

The interview we’re showing today was recorded in October 2014 for the 250th edition of Designing Worlds. We were hoping to have Ebbe back on the show for the 500th – and we are devastated that interview will now never happen.

In the words of Shakespeare (almost) …
Small time, but in that small most greatly lived
This star of Linden.

Come and join us for today’s Designing Worlds and see again our first interview with Ebbe Linden at our Watch Party in Garden of Dreams – or see it on the web.

Join us today, Monday 19th April at 2pm SLT in our beautiful studio in Garden of Dreams as we journey back into the past for a show first shown in June 2016, when we visited the beautiful Looking Glass region, which at that time had been totally redesigned by Sharni Azalee and Marcus Inkpen.

You can watch it on this blog, and you can also see the show on the Designing Worlds Vimeo channel at: https://vimeo.com/169056906. And you can join the special Watch Party at 2pm SLT in our studio on Garden of Dreams.

Marcus and Sharni had done a complete redesign that has been two years in the planning, and several months in the execution and – as we discovered when Marcus showed us around – the end result is gorgeous, and has become a favourite place for many on the grid – including us; we filmed the 2019 Halloween Tale there.

Sharni was unable to join us (she’s based in Australia and was soundly asleep when we filmed) but Marcus was able to share with us many of the beauties and the fun things that await visitors to The Looking Glass. It makes for an amazing eye-candy episode as he shows us the Art Gallery, the hidden upper streets, the towers, the bridge, the performance areas, the landscaping … and we certainly didn’t have time to cover everything!

It’s a show you won’t want to miss – so do come and join us for the Watch Party – or watch it on the web!

You can visit The Looking Glass on Horizon Dream here.  And make sure to look out for Sharni Azalee’s stunning region J’Adoube at this year’s Fantasy Faire, opening on Thursday 22nd April!

You can watch it on this blog, and you can also see the show on the Designing Worlds Vimeo Archive channel at: https://vimeo.com/516465206. And you can join the special Watch Party (at 2pm SLT, Monday 25th February) in our studio on Garden of Dreams.

#DW152 Exploring Avilion Feb 13th 2012 from Saffia Widdershins on Vimeo.

Originally a special Designing Worlds for Valentine’s Day Eve, Saffia and Elrik visit the extensive regions of Avilion in Second Life, a complex of mediaeval-themed roleplay, residential and communal areas with an extremely strong sense of community.

The regions date back to 2006, and are home to the famous and extremely romantic Avilion Ballroom. Saffia and Elrik also explore combat areas, visit a gypsy encampment and elf circle, and discover the Avilion Library, where the history of the community is maintained.

And, of course, no visit to Avilion would be complete without a visit to the famous ballroom – something that our Prim Perfect readers voted to see included in their favourite Valentine locations.

Thankfully, unlike many other locations we have visited, Avilion is still with us – an estate of seven associated regions. You can visit the information point on Avilion here: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Avilion/248/128/22

It makes for a fascinating and beautiful show – so do come and join us at 2pm or watch online!

Finally, we end with the traditional lantern ceremony that marks each day of the Expo – as it has done since 2012.

Danny Borne's House, with the interior design by Pitsch Parx

Danny Bourne’s House, with the interior design by Pitsch Parx

Join Designing Worlds at 2pm SLT Monday 15th March for this week’s show from the archives which goes right back to January 2011. The Second Life Home and Garden Expo is happening at present (running until March 21st – see more here: https://slhomeandgardenexpo.wordpress.com/) and some notable designers from the past have returned, including Pitsch Parx and Danny Bourne. This show is a salute to a beautiful house and terrific interior design that the two of them created.

#113 Designing a Second life Home with Pitsch Parx – 31st January 2011 from Saffia Widdershins on Vimeo.

You can watch it on this blog, and you can also see the show on the Designing Worlds Vimeo Archive channel at: https://vimeo.com/373065980. And you can join the special Watch Party (at 2pm SLT, Monday 25th February) in our studio on Garden of Dreams. Note that since US clocks have gone forward, this will be an hour earlier for everyone else!

Danny Bourne’s House, with the interior design by Pitsch Parx

We met pitsch Parx of UrbanizeD, whose interior design concept this beautiful home was, and he gave us a guided tour of the house. We will also met Danny Bourne, the creator of the building, and Charlene Trudeau, owner and manager of SkyBeam Estates.

The house attracted attention in the blogsphere at the time, and you can read more about it here on Chic at Phil’s Place, but today viewers will have a chance to see it in detail! Incidentally, Chic Aeon, the writer of that blog post, is one of the contestants in the Home and Garden Decoration Contest at this year’s Expoyou can go and discover all fourteen houses here!

Home and Garden Expo – May 2009!

Join Designing Worlds at 2pm SLT Monday 8th March for this week’s show from the archives which goes right back to May 2009. The Second Life Home and Garden Expo is happening at present (running until March 21st – see more here: https://slhomeandgardenexpo.wordpress.com/) but we have our show from the SECOND Home and Garden Expo, way back in 2009.

You can watch it on this blog, and you can also see the show on the Designing Worlds Vimeo Archive channel at: https://vimeo.com/371353284. And you can join the special Watch Party (at 2pm SLT, Monday 25th February) in our studio on Garden of Dreams.

#041 The second Home, Garden and Patio Expo – and the very first Designing Worlds show! 6th May 2009 from Saffia Widdershins on Vimeo.

This was the first episode of Designing Worlds, the rebranding of MetaMakeover, as our partners SLCN changed over to being Treet TV. Appropriately enough, this episode saw a visit to the opening of the second Home, Garden and Patio Expo which that year covered four sims – twice the size of the 2008 Expo. Our sister publication Prim Perfect had a pavilion at the show where they’ll be showcasing new designers as part of their Prim Perfect Pathfinders project – and you can read about the show in much more detail here: http://bit.ly/32lAidp

Home and Garden Expo - May 2009!

Home and Garden Expo – May 2009!

There are quite a few changes from that show to the Expo this year – as you’ll be able to see in future episodes, as we are broadcasting two shows from this year’s Expo later this season. But, for now, relax and enjoy The Way We Were!
