A Wizard's Winter

A Wizard’s Winter

In our new episode of Designing Worlds, Elrik and Saffia set out to explore some of the wonderful winter regions that you can find on the Second Life grid this winter! And we have news of the fabulous Designing Worlds Ball, too!

Join us at 2pm today Monday 14th December  when you can see the show on the Designing Worlds Vimeo channel at: https://vimeo.com/channels/dworlds. Or join us for our Watch Party in the Designing Worlds studios in the Garden of Dreams at 2pm SLT.

Angel Manor

Angel Manor

We talk to Kaya Angel of Angel Manor about the special winter landscapes he has created for his region, with a host of activities and events, and Saffia visits the special winter region created by Tymus Tenk and Truck Meredith of Calas Galadhon, which has a gorgeous pavilion, activities and events – and a whole fantasy wonderland in the sky!

Calas Galadhon Christmas

We also travel around the grid to encounter The Land of Snowflakes, created by Xanthe Firehawk, a traditional Christmas environment; the very wintery and beautiful Distant Edge, landscaped by Bridget Twig and Remuera Seetan. We explore A Wizard’s Winter, where you can ride on broomsticks and explore a stunning beautiful village, and we explore a stunning four-region winter Mountain complex, created by Conte Alchemi – and even try to come back down again …

And Wildstar Beaumont has some beautiful images to share of the Christmas Expo, now sadly finished.

Join Designing Worlds at 2pmSLT Monday 7th December for this week’s show from the archives which goes right back to March 2014, when we we paid a final visit to the beautiful dieselpunk region of Seraph City.
#DW224 The Dieselpunk World of Seraph City – March 3rd 2014 from Saffia Widdershins on Vimeo. You can watch it on this blog, and you can also see the show on the Designing Worlds Vimeo Archive channel at: https://vimeo.com/382965949. And you can join the special Watch Party (at 2pm SLT, Monday 7th December) in our studio on Garden of Dreams.

We tour some of the beautiful builds in the city – and also talk about how episodes of The Blackened Mirror were filmed there – and were the basis of some popular games during the first season of the show.

Sadly, a few days after we filmed here, the owner announced his intention of converting the sim into a private region. Already the name has been changed and many of the iconic buildings have gone (including the Hawkesmoor Apartment buildings which we visit). Obviously, we had no idea that this was going to happen when we filmed the show – and nor did the Estate Manager, Edward Pearse, who was our escort.

At the time, we thought long and hard about broadcasting this, but decided to go ahead, even though the show was more an elegy to Seraph City than an invitation to become part of a community. Of course, six years later, we have a lot of elegies in our Archives!

Patch and Brett Linden, in conversation with Saffia and Elrik, photographed by Wildstar Beaumont

In our most recent episode of Designing Worlds, we sat down for a chat with Patch and Brett Linden, about recent happenings in and future plans for Second Life. And we covered a wide range of topics – with some interesting side trips!

DW426 – Lindens & Stilt Homes from Richard Elen on Vimeo.

Brett Linden is VP of Marketing for Linden Lab and Patch Linden is Vice President of Product Operations for Linden Lab. We had a wide ranging discussion that covered the Uplift to the Cloud, now largely completed, and – now that new land is once again an option – the forthcoming Linden Homes release of Stilt Homes.

We also discussed the impact of the pandemic on Second Life and how the Lab has handled the significant influx of new and returning residents as the virtual environment has become increasingly important, including the availability of “turnkey” educational and conference environments that users can adapt and configure from a range of available designs.

Wildstar Beaumont gaves us a look around Rosehaven in the autumn and finally, we looked ahead to winter treats the Linden have planned, with a visit to Winter Wonderland … and news of a planned snowfight. Linden Lab versus the Residents – bring it on!

Elrik interviews 7Seas fishers in 2008

It was a very special show, as we held a fishing contest, on the waterfront at the back of our old Meta Makeover studios on Northpoint! And it was special for another reason, as it marked the first appearance of Elrik Merlin as co-host on the show!

In the first part of the show, Saffia interviewed the devisers of the wonderful 7Seas Fishing, Jen and Seven Shikami.

And in the second half of the show, we had our own fishing contest – live on TV! You can see Elrik Merlin interviewing some of the contestants – as well as Crap Mariner, a very keen fisher, achieving Hall of Fame status.

And for the FIRST time in TWELVE years, we will be giving away TEN unique MetaMakeover Blue Ragged Fish at the Watch Party for the show!

City of Birmingham Library, photographed by Wildstar Beaumont

City of Birmingham Library, photographed by Wildstar Beaumont

In this episode from our archives first shown in 2013, we look at a fascinating project that shows a convincing business use for virtual worlds with a visit to the library created in Second Life, to model the real life library being built for the City of Birmingham in the UK.

You can watch it on this blog, and you can also see the show on the Designing Worlds Vimeo Archive channel at: https://vimeo.com/381836842. And you can join the special Watch Party (at 2pm SLT, Monday 16th November) in our studio on Garden of Dreams.

#DW213 The Library of Birmingham – Oct 14th 2013 from Saffia Widdershins on Vimeo.

Back in 2009, the City of Birmingham in England wanted to create an immersive online version of their planned city centre library. They turned to the company Daden Limited to realise their concept. This became a valuable tool in the creation of what is now a magnificent building in the heart of the city.

Together with David Burden of Daden, we explored the library, the interactive tools that were created for discovering people’s responses, the training processes that were created – and learning how the librarians and other people responded to this.

And we also talked to David about why he feels that Second Life is no longer the best environment for creating such projects. He made some serious and very valid points – you won’t want to miss this!

This really was one of our most thought-provoking shows ever– so do join us for a slice of history at 2pm SLT for the Watch Party in Garden of Dreams!

P.S. Fans of 1920s Birmingham – especially as featured in the popular UK TV series Peaky Blinders – might want to visit  the VOIR Gallery, created by Simone (SimoneFiore) and Frenchy75. There’s a new exhibition on currently, and you can read an excellent review of the gallery and the exhibition by Inara Pey on her blog, Living in a Modem World.

The Playa at Burn2, photographed by Wildstar Beaumont

The Playa at Burn2, photographed by Wildstar Beaumont

In our most recent episode of Designing Worlds, we visited Burn2 2020, the annual Second Life celebration and impromptu art festival that parallels the Burning Man festival usually held in the Black Rock Desert in Nevada every year.

DW425 – Burn2 2020 from Richard Elen on Vimeo.

Originally begun as “Burning Life” by Linden Lab, several of whom were “Burners” in real life, the community-run festival is now called Burn2 and is a fully authorised regional Burning Man event.

This year Burn2 has been particularly important as the real-life Burning Man festival was cancelled due to Covid-19 and instead has been held virtually, with Burn2 being the most extensive and longest-established. As a result there has been a significant influx of real-life Burners into Burn2, often bringing unique art exhibits and general zaniness with them.

In this feature-length episode we talk to organisers and exhibitors at this year’s Burn2, Supersuz, DJ Puddles, Fifi Oh, Holocluck Henley and Freia Guillaume.

We also visit some of the exhibits, and take a look at the philosophy behind the festival.

In addition, Saffia sets out to take a balloon ride – but finds a much more exciting mount! And we catch the Lamplighters, the Burning of the Temple, and the Burning of the Man himself.

The Nile

The Nile

In this episode from our archives, we look back to a time when many new grids outside Second Life were flourishing. Many have now fallen away but – back in 2010 (ten years ago!), Heritage Key was one of the most exciting.

You can watch it on this blog, and you can also see the show on the Designing Worlds Vimeo Archive channel at: https://vimeo.com/371602588. And you can join the special Watch Party (at 2pm SLT) in our studio on Garden of Dreams.

#087 Visiting Heritage Key – 01 June 2010 from Saffia Widdershins on Vimeo.

Elrik and Saffia took a trip to this whole new grid – a spectacular, integrated display created by some of the best designers in virtual worlds.

Inspecting the Terracotta Warriors

Inspecting the Terracotta Warriors

Heritage Key was created by the team at Rezzable (who brought us the Greenies, the Black Swan and more in Second Life). It was designed to provide a series of powerfully immersive environments – and we explored different aspects with Viv Trafalgar, while Jon Himoff of Rezzable joined us in the studio to discuss the project.

Valley of the Kings

Valley of the Kings

One fascinating aspect was the work they were doing with Unity3D to create an introductory experience that makes use of a standard web browser to access this virtual world. Unity 3D is still popular with smaller, customised world developments – Sinewave Space and Daeden Limited use Unity in their constructions.

Amarna Relaxing

Sadly, Heritage Key is no longer with us – but this show gives you an opportunity to see some of their amazing creations! So do join us for a slice of history at 2pm SLT for the Watch Party in Garden of Dreams!

If you would like to learn more about some of the other grids that were thriving in 2010, the June 2010 issue of Prim Perfect magazine (available here at Calameo on the web) had a number of articles and interviews, Looking Beyond the Second Life Grid. Free inworld copies will be available at the Watch Party in Garden of Dreams.
