In this episode, brought to you from a special studio constructed for us by Eliza Weirwight of Patron, we take a look at some outstanding winter locations in Second Life.

The show goes live on Monday 10th December at 2pm SLT on the Designing Worlds Vimeo channel and on the Designing Worlds channel at SLArtist – and you can join the special Watch Party (also at 2pm SLT) in our studio on Garden of Dreams.

We talk to Eliza herself and look at some of her special seasonal products; we talk to Kess Viiperi about her winter landscaping vlogging (as she demonstrated how to create a wonderful wintry landscape of your own); and we meet up with Tymus Tenk of Calas Galadhon and take a detailed tour of their winter regions. You’ll be amazed at the changes since our last show there, when we visited for Halloween!

In this episode of Designing Worlds, we pay a visit to the Second Life Cheerleading Squad on Cheertopia – and learn about how they have created a powerful, generous and fun community!

The show goes live on Monday 3rd December at 2pm SLT on the Designing Worlds Vimeo channel and on the Designing Worlds channel at SLArtist – and you can join the special Watch Party (also at 2pm SLT) in our studio on Garden of Dreams.

Our guide is Brandi Darkwatch, who is a Senior Co-Captain of the Cheerleaders, and she tells us about the amazing Cheerleading community, their training sessions and their work for charities including Cake Against Cancer and, above all, for Relay for Life.

We learn about not just the main Cheerleading Squad, but also their younger cohort, the Comets (for teenagers) and the adorable youngest group – the Spitfires, who we’ll see perform.

In this episode we return to one of the most beautiful regions in Second Life, the home of His Majesty Brick Masters. And you can judge its beauties for yourself when the show goes live on Monday 26th November at 2pm SLT on the Designing Worlds Vimeo channel and on the Designing Worlds channel at SLArtist – and you can join the special viewing party (also at 2pm SLT) in our studio on Garden of Dreams.

We visited the estate a little while ago, but since then His Majesty has totally overhauled this and has had a fantastic new mansion built for him by the renowned Second Life architect Patch Thibaud – and the result is spectacular!

Not only is the building is a fine example of virtual world architecture and design at its best, but the interiors form a beautiful synergy with the architecture, building to a holistic design triumph – which is also a beautiful home.

Saffia’s tip – make sure you don’t miss the ceilings!

His Majesty welcomes visitors – you’ll find the gates of his Estate here.
and at the pier, the gondola will be waiting to carry you across to the island, if you want to arrive in style (and who doesn’t?) Certain areas of the house are private. The are roped off and marked – please respect this.

And there’s something else not to be missed – hiding away in the sky above the house is an amazing funfair with a great many attractions!

It all makes for a fascinating show – make sure you don’t miss it. And, if you can, join the special viewing party (also at 2pm SLT) in our studio on Garden of Dreams.

Once or twice a year, at various charity events, we auction Designing Worlds shows to raise money for the charity in question, and this year, His Majesty was one of the winners of the auction at Fantasy Faire – and this is his very special show. Two more will be coming next season.

Jack and Elaine Whitehorn Memorial Library, Caledon Victoria City

In this week’s Designing Worlds show, we are exploring and discussing Second Life libraries, especially the amazing network of libraries that has developed in the Victorian-themed estate of Caledon, under the curatorship of Sir JJ Drinkwater and his team of volunteers (popularly known as the Library Militant).

The show goes live at 2pm SLT, Monday 19th November on the Designing Worlds Vimeo channel and on the Designing Worlds channel at SLArtist – and you can join the special viewing party (also at 2pm SLT) in our studio on Garden of Dreams.

In the show, we explore with Sir JJ Drinkwater some of the Caledon libraries, such as the Jack and Elaine Whitehorn Memorial Library and the HG Wells Memorial Library, as well as the Gertrude Jekyll Gardening Collection and the Steampunk Collection. We learn of the extensive renovation the Whitehorn is currently undergoing, and the reasons behind it.

We also hold a detailed discussion with a group of librarians and people interested in and supportive of the work of libraries from all over Second Life – including Sir JJ and Sere Timeless (Owner of the SL Regions of Rocca Sorrentina and the Bay of Naples), Valibrarian Gregg, Director of Community Virtual Library, Kghia Gherardi, Library Patron & Volunteer, and Beth Ghostraven, owner of the Book and Tankard Pub in Caledon Victoria and enthusiastic library supporter. Together they discuss the work of the libraries and how the concept of a library adapts itself to the possibilities and challenges of a virtual world.

The 1st World War Digital Poetry Archive at Frideswide

The 1st World War Digital Poetry Archive at Frideswide

November 11th marked the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that brought the First World War to an end. Signed at the eleven hour of the eleventh day, the Armistice silenced the guns that had killed so many over the four years of the War. On November 11th, 2018, Designing Worlds released a special short film to mark the occasion at 11.10am UK time. This film is still available.

Please join us at our usual showtime of 2pm SLT on Monday 12th November, when we will be hosting a showing of the film Remembrance: 1918-2018 in the Designing Worlds studio on Garden of Dreams, followed by the show we made for the opening of the 1st World War Digital Poetry Archive at Frideswide in 2009.

The exhibition simulates aspects of life in the trenches on the Western Front during the 1914-1918 war and presents work by the “War Poets” of the period. As visitors explore the simulation, they can listen to the voices of veterans recounting their experiences of the war, view original film footage and photographs from the time, and learn about life on the Western Front, encountering some of the most powerful poetry in English literature by seeing the original manuscripts, and turning the pages of the poets’ war diaries and letters.

This is a combination of deeply moving films – don’t miss our special viewing party.

If you can’t attend in person – tune in to the web at 2pm SLT on Monday for a showing on SLartist – or catch it later in the week on the SLArtist.com channel – or on the Prim Perfect or Designing Worlds blogs.

You can still visit the Archive in Second Life here (for the training camp) or here (for the Western Front). You can obtain a hud at the training camp to help you navigate around the region. It’s a moving and powerful recreation of the horrors of the Western Front – and we would strongly recommend people visit it.

You can also see the special film of the song that concludes the show – “Only Remembered”, recorded by leading British folk musicians Coope Boyes & Simpson providing the music in their unique and moving acapella style, as we view aspects of the unique exhibition by the University of Oxford’s First World War Poetry Digital Archive.

DW064A – Only Remembered (from Designing Worlds episode 64, The Western Front) from Richard Elen on Vimeo.

“Only Remembered” (Bonar/Sankey/Tams Voice Publishing) is used by permission and is taken from the album “Private Peaceful – The Concert” (No Masters NMCD24, nomasters.co.uk) by Coope Boyes & Simpson (coopeboyesandsimpson.co.uk) The song – originally a Horatius Bonar / Ira Sankey hymn from the 19th century, arranged by John Tams – also appears in the play “War Horse”, adapted by Nick Stafford from the book by Michael Morpurgo.

If you can’t attend in person – tune in to the web at 2pm SLT on Monday for a showing on Vimeo – or catch it later in the week on the SLArtist.com channel – or on the Prim Perfect or Designing Worlds blogs.

Please to remember the Fifth of November with gunpowder, treason and plot.
I see no reason why gunpowder treason should ever be forgot!

So runs the rhyme that all British children grow up reciting … and the cause for every British November 5th being celebrated with bonfires, fireworks and the traditional burning of the guy!

Join us at 2pm SLT today, Monday 5th November for Designing Worlds at our studio in Garden of Dreams, for a special show all about fireworks.

In Part 1, Saffia and Elrik look at the history behind the Gunpowder Plot – and find some modern resonances in a tale of religious fanaticism and repression, as well as a triumph for (partial) democracy.

Then, in Part 2, the intrepid Toady Nakamura, co-janitor of the wonderful Grendel’s endeavours to teach Saffia to make a firework. Brave toad!

And finally, in Part 3, we talk to the amazing Racer X Gullwing who shows us some of his amazing fireworks (in addition to telling us about the Giant Snail Races).

And after the show is over, we’ll be launching fireworks from the roof of the studio!

It all makes for an explosively amazing show, so do come and join us at 2pm!
