Starry Stars and Stuff in Sansar

Starry Stars and Stuff in Sansar

Join us at 2pm SLT today, Monday 4th December, for the new episode of Designing Worlds at our studio in Garden of Dreams in Second Life, for a very special show as we pay our first ever visit to the new Linden Lab platform – Sansar.

In this first (or two) episodes, we explore the studio that Kayle Matzerath has created for us in Garden of Worlds in Sansar. Then Saffia talks to Jenn, Lead Community Manager for Linden Lab on Sansar, who talks about the way that the grid is developing, and shows her own Experience, Starry Stars & Stuff (a work in progress), built with items already available on the Sansar marketplace.  And we also take a look at two more of the Sansar Experiences – the Diner, created by C3rb3rus and Stasis Interrupted Chapter 1 by Tyler Scarborough, which is a game (where Saffia, inevitably, dies).

The Diner in Sansar

The Diner in Sansar

Sansar is fascinating, but still very clearly a creator beta with a long way to go yet. In some ways, it is awesome – the quality of the design, for example. In other ways, it’s primitive – there are no animations that let us sit down, for example, and although we could stand on Jenn’s carousel and be whirled around, we couldn’t ride the horses. Jenn’s facial expressions as she talked were as good as any I’ve seen in Second Life and needed no HUD to drive them. But I couldn’t capture my own lip movements as I filmed.

Stasis Interrupted - Chapter 1 in Sansar

Stasis Interrupted – Chapter 1 in Sansar

You’ll also notice some other hic-cups in filming. For example, at one point you’ll see the very simple interface on the screen. That’s because Sansar doesn’t automatically set screen size to a filming friendly ratio (that’s on the Advanced menu in Second Life), so setting screen size up was a bit hit and miss. And the avatars are a little crude – although they are to some extent customisable and – in the next major Sansar update, scheduled for mid-December, fashion related elements will be introduced (and will be available for sale). You can see the details on Inara’s Pey’s blog here.

We’re planning to start covering Sansar on a regular process, so you’ll be able follow its development through our shows over the coming seasons.

So do come and join us for a fascinating show at 2pm SLT.

Join us at 2pm SLT today, Monday 6th November, for the new episode of Designing Worlds at our studio in Garden of Dreams, when we visit the fabulous Burn2, the Second Life representation of the famous Burning Man festival in the Nevada desert.

The theme this year was Radical Ritual, and the Burners celebrated that theme amazingly!

Saffia was unwell for the filming of this episode, so Elrik is joined by our old friend Caledonia Skytower. to explore the art and the iconic events that form essential parts of the Festival. We talk to artists and organisers, and we also have footage of the amazing Burns themselves – the Man Burn and the Temple Burn, with extracts from the dances of the Lamplighters.

It all makes for a stunning show, so do come and join us at 2pm!

Join us at 2pm SLT today, Monday 30th October, for the new episode of Designing Worlds at our studio in Garden of Dreams, for a spooky tale in a very spooky location – Octoberville!

Octoberville, photographed by Wildstar Beaumont

We start by talking to Cherub Spectre and Master Kaos, the owners of Octoberville, who tell us all about the wonderfully spooky – and hugely popular – region they create for one month every year to celebrate Halloween. We explore Octoberville and learn something of its history – with roots in the real world, as well as its developments in Second Life. And we find out all about the amazing community that has grown up around it.

There’s still time to visit as Octoberville will be open till early November!

Then, in the second Part of the show, we have a spooky tale for Halloween (filmed largely in Octoberville). It’s the famous story by Washington Irving – The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, adapted especially for the show by Caledonia Skytower.

It all makes for a really wonderfully haunting Halloween show, so do come and join us at 2pm!

Join us at 2pm SLT today, Monday 23rd October, for the new episode of Designing Worlds at our studio in Garden of Dreams, when we will be travelling out of Second Life to visit the Inworldz grid, and discover non profit activities that are happening there.

Inworldz is one of the ‘walled garden’ alternative grids, which are based on the technology of Second Life, although many – like Inworldz – have developed their own alternatives to some of Second Life’s developments. But the ‘walled garden’ grids are different from the Open Grid and other associated grids like the Canada Grid, in that they don’t allow hypergridding – that is jumping from grid to grid.

Hope Village, photographed by Wildstar Beaumont

The advantage of the walled garden grids is that they offer the ability for creators to sell their work, and a measure of protection from copyright theft, and also, usually, at a cheaper price for land than Second Life. The downside is that for these grids to be sustainable, they need to attract a certain level of creators and residents – and that can be hard. But Inworldz is a grid that has succeeded better than most, not just in attracting residents but – and this seems to be the secret of successful grids – in building communities. Tinies, dinkies and elves all have strong communities here – and there are opportunities for ordinary human avatars – and creators too!

In this show we look at some of the nonprofit communities in Inworldz, centred around Hope Island. We talk to Miss Eilidh McCullough and Bain Finch, and take a trip around the Hope Village community. And we also explore Relay for Life of Inworldz which was coming to its fruition the week we were over there.

It makes for a really fascinating show, so do come and join us at 2pm!
