To celebrate the British November 5th being celebrated with bonfires, fireworks and the traditional burning of the guy, we have a special show all about fireworks, now on the web!

DW383 – Fireworks in Second Life from Richard Elen on Vimeo.

In Part 1, Saffia and Elrik look at the history behind the Gunpowder Plot – and find some modern resonances in a tale of religious fanaticism and repression, as well as a triumph for (partial) democracy.

Then, in Part 2, the intrepid Toady Nakamura, co-janitor of the wonderful Grendel’s endeavours to teach Saffia to make a firework. Brave toad!

If you’d like to make a firework of your own, you can collect the kit and instructions from the Designing Worlds Studio until Monday 12th November.

Please to remember the Fifth of November with gunpowder, treason and plot.
I see no reason why gunpowder treason should ever be forgot!

So runs the rhyme that all British children grow up reciting … and the cause for every British November 5th being celebrated with bonfires, fireworks and the traditional burning of the guy!

Join us at 2pm SLT today, Monday 24 September for Designing Worlds at our studio in Garden of Dreams in Second Life, for the new episode of our autumn/fall season, we take a look at the story behind the 15-minute machinima produced by Caledonia Skytower, Honey Heart and our very own Elrik Merlin: ARRIVALS & DEPARTURES.

Saffia Widdershins and guest co-host Corwyn Allen talk to the film-makers about how the production came about and how it was made, in the special theatre created by Honey Heart for the premiere; and we talk to Marcus Inkpen of in-world creators The Looking Glass who produced the build, Erstwhile Station, in which the story is set.

Arrivals & Departures – Trailer from Richard Elen on Vimeo.

ARRIVALS & DEPARTURES is a 15-minute machinima shot in Second Life®, based on a short story written as part of Fantasy Faire 2018, the tenth annual virtual world-based fund-raiser for the American Cancer Society.

ARRIVALS & DEPARTURES presents a glimpse into two individual journeys that are brought together and shared one last time, in a story set in a vibrant, steampunk-inspired, fantasy environment. As the action transitions from a public encounter into a more personal, private exchange, the film highlights the vital importance of storytelling, harking back to an earlier time when tales were woven into a verbal tradition that was handed down by word of mouth.

Though the word is never uttered in the film, it addresses aspects of our attitudes towards death. Interwoven within is a reminder that while those who leave us pass beyond our reach, we may continue to carry them within us, breathing life into their passions and ideals, by teaching what we have learned from them, and inspiring others.

The programme includes the complete film, and a slideshow of production shots plus images from the premiere, taken by Wildstar Beaumont.

More information on the film and the producers is available from the CEH Productions website, cehproductions.com
