We visit the Christmas Expo to see the stores and designs there, and take a sleigh ride with Trader Whiplash and Nuala Maracas to see the Lights of Hope – houses decorated for Christmas by the designers – and also tour the Linden Lights of Hope – which were houses decorated by the Lindens and the Moles (tinies – look out for the waffle mountain and syrup lake at 25.37).

We also visit some of the fabulous Winter Places on show in Second Life, including Russian fairytale-like Warm Angel and the recreation of the Austrian town of Gosau created by two real-life farmers who live in the area, and the Bells of Rhymney which mixes a Rivendell-like atmosphere with Baroque architecture.

Today Designing Worlds is visiting the new Second Life Continent of Bellisseria, where the new style Linden Homes are located,  discovering the amazing communities that are are growing there and seeing some of the things that people have done with their new homes.

From 2pm today, 25th November, you can see the show on the Designing Worlds Vimeo channel at: https://vimeo.com/channels/dworlds and on the Designing Worlds channel at SLArtist at: https://www.slartist.com/browse-dw-videos-1-date.html. And you can join the special Watch Party (also at 2pm SLT) in our studio on Garden of Dreams.

In the show, we meet three of the people behind the Bellisseria Citizens Group, an important unifying force in the community: Mirah Vieria, Gingir Ghoststar and North Crannock. They tell us how the community has grown over the last seven months since we first visited – when the land was uninhabited and new. We visit the Fairgrounds, where residents can hold events, and some of the other cool places to hang out – both Mole-created and resident designed.

The Lindens (and the Moles) are catering for a wide variety of interests in Bellisseria, such as horse riders, dog owners and railway enthusiasts and – much to her delight – Saffia gets to swim with the Mers of Belliseria!

And we sent our intrepid photographer Wildstar Beaumont off with a very, very long list of the highlights of Bellisseria – it’s well worth seeing what he captured!

This is a really fascinating show – so do tune in or join us at 2pm SLT at the Watch Party in Garden of Dreams!

It’s also guaranteed to make you want your own new Linden Home – at least, Saffia went out after the show and got her own Linden Home (one of the smaller sized trailers) then had enormous fun furnishing it – and all on 175 land impact.

Discussing Bakes on Mesh with Vir and Strawberry

Discussing Bakes on Mesh with Vir and Strawberry

In this show from Designing Worlds, we discuss the newly-available Second Life technology Bakes on Mesh also known as BOM) – what it is and how it can be used.

DW408 – Bakes On Mesh from Richard Elen on Vimeo.

We’re joined by Vir Linden, Second Life Viewer Manager, and Strawberry Linden, Marketing Content Specialist, to give us the background, and by creators Siddean Munro, the owner of Slink, home of mesh bodies, hands, feet and heads – as well as other things; and Ampersand Artful of Adored, creator of makeup and tattoos – and other avatar elements.

Bakes On Mesh allows you to use those old system clothes you’ve had in your inventory with your BOM-compatible mesh body and head – but that’s just the beginning. Bakes On Mesh also means that we’ll be seeing less of Applier HUDs and their complexities, and the graphics-heavy onion skinning of mesh outfits and make-up, and much more.

You can see more about Bakes on Mesh in the full version of Strawberry Linden’s video (we show a clip on the show), and there are two tutorials from Ampersand Artful that Strawberry recommends the first being an Introduction to Bakes on Mesh, and the second a Tutorial on How to Use It– something that Ampersand and Siddean also demonstrate on the show.

As this show premiered on November 4th, the day before Firework Night, in the UK, we round off with a special fireworks display at the Designing Worlds studio.

Dresden Art Gallery

In this show from the archives, we look back to one of our history shows where – in celebration of our tenth anniversary – we ran a series of shows looking at the events of all the intervening years.  In this show, we look back to 2008 – 2009, right back to Designing Worlds’ beginnings as MetaMakeover, a show on SLCN.

DW358 – Designing Worlds 10th Anniversary Special #1 from Richard Elen on Vimeo.

We’re helped by Marianne McCann, Second Life historian, who shares with us some of the features that arrived and frictions that enraged the residents of Second Life in those years (e.g. <cough>the Homesteads row</cough>), and by Wildstar Beaumont who has ransacked his photo archive for us!

And you’ll have a chance to see extracts from the very first show, Mr Merlin’s first appearance as co-host, the beautiful virtual Dresden Art Museum, the story of the changeover from MetaMakeover to Designing Worlds … and much more!

We’ve been covering the eminent closure of the Linden Endowment for the Arts (LEA) at the end of August, and now the plans to save it in a redeveloped form. Today’s Designing Worlds feature-length episode – the last in our current season – pays a final visit to the LEA in its current form, and looks back at some of the fascinating projects and installations that have appeared there over the years.

The show goes live on Monday 29th July at 2pm SLT on the Designing Worlds Vimeo channel, on the Designing Worlds channel at SLArtist – and you can join the special Watch Party (also at 2pm SLT) in our studio on Garden of Dreams.

Please note – this show was recorded in the aftermath of the closure announcement. At that point, we did not know about the plans that would emerge to continue the work of the LEA. If you would to learn more about that – please read further here: https://primperfect.net/2019/07/22/saving-the-linden-endowment-for-the-arts-how-you-can-help/

In this episode, we talk to JMB Balogh, before going on to look at work created over the years by Livio Korobase, Xinehop Guisse, Art Oluja, Frankx Lefavre, Ceakay Ballyhoo, Storm Septimus, Tansee, Mario2 Helstein and Jo Williams, Gem Preiz, Kicca Igaly & Nessuno Myoo.

In this episode, we paid the second of two visits to the Second Life 16th Community Birthday Celebration, or SL16B for short.

DW404 – SL16B Part2 from Richard Elen on Vimeo.

We visited some of the major Mole-built installations, such as the Welcome Area, the Main Stage and the Tapestry of Time. In addition we checked out the latest in Linden Homes – the campers and trailers.

These will be set out as part of the new (and rapidly growing) continent for new Linden Homes, but they have a very different landscape setting from the new houseboats and traditional homes. These have a more rustic, mountainous setting with more of a vacation feel and – on the individual 512 plots, the accommodation itself takes up far less space. Patch Linden told me that the idea was to encourage residents to create more outdoor activities – barbecues and campfires, as well as outdoor sports. And there will be lakes for boating … swimming … maybe fishing?

We also visit some resident builds, including a botanical laboratory in space with a mystery story of its own (yes, it’s another great Loki Eliot build!). Then DNA Café, because of course, following the 1950s theme, the 1950s was the decade when the secrets of DNA were first discovered by Crick, Watson, Franklin and Wilkins.

There’s the fascinating Four Bridges Project which, for SL16B, shares the story of Dooky Chase’s Restaurant. And we also visit a miniature replica of the UN Building created for the SL Newser team by Silvia Ametz, which is a very clever optical illusion! Finally, we explore a world of dragons and tinies, and catch up with the latest from the Isle of Wyrms – but sadly no dragon raids on a giant cake this year!
