From Saffia:

Each year, as part of One Billion Rising in Second Life, we release a video, filmed inworld, for Tena Clark’s anthemic “Break The Chain”. Featuring volunteers from the One Billion Rising group, and choreography from Guerilla Burlesque, this year’s video is celebratory, inspirational and moving, and we had a lot of fun filming it.

Please join us at noon on Wednesday February 9th (PDT/SLT) for the release of this year’s machinima, with videographer Tristan Lyonesse and the team from One Billion Rising.

We’re still looking for volunteers to help with the event on February 14th. Fill out the Google form below, and we’ll be in touch to offer full training.

In our new episode of Designing Worlds, we visit the fantastic event that was One Billion Rising 2021, held on February 14th. For the ninth year, men and women in Second Life joined activists, writers, thinkers, celebrities, and people across the world to Rise, Resist and Unite as a show of unity, individual strength, and the need for change – to confront the devastating statistic that 1 in 3 women around the world will be raped or beaten in her lifetime – that’s One Billion Women and Girls.

DW430 – One Billion Rising in Second Life – 2021 from Richard Elen on Vimeo.

Watch the show above, or you can see it on the Designing Worlds Vimeo channel at: https://vimeo.com/channels/dworlds.

We talk to the organisers of the event (and Saffia was one of them!), Briony Writer, Dawny Daviau, Kess Crystal, Adele Ward and AvaJean Westland. We learn about the vital role of volunteers, the role of dance and music, and the importance of the landscaping – including the #MeToo Forest and the regions, decorated by Krystali Rabeni, Eclair Martinek, Dawny Daviau and Kess Crystal. And we look at the beautiful stage, created by Kilik Lekvoda, all following the special theme of this year’s OBR, Rising Gardens.

In this week’s Designing Worlds, we visited the wonderful 24 hour event that was One Billion Rising 2019.

DW392 – One Billion Rising in Second Life 2019 from Richard Elen on Vimeo.

On February 14, 2019, women and men in Second Life joined people across the world to Rise as a show of unity, individual strength, and the need for change. The event featured a four-region stage where 200 people could dance together, surrounded by an area of art installations and informational exhibits.

This year the One Billion Rising event continued last year’s theme – we RISE in Solidarity Against the Exploitation of Women in a world where governments and leaders seem to be increasingly anti-women. And we also had a special tribute to the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize laureates – Denis Mukwege and Nadia Murad – for their work against sexual violence as a weapon of war.

As in previous years, we asked a variety of performers to play over the 24-hour period, which let people all over the world attend the event no matter their timezone. The regions had a General maturity rating to allow all residents an opportunity to participate.

This programme documents OBR in SL 2019 and includes interviews with leading contributors and co-creators.

The latest episode of this season of Designing Worlds – when we look back at the One Billion Rising in Second Life festival, held on February 14th 2018 – is now on the web!

Regular viewers will remember that this year our spring season was a series of retrospectives, celebrating ten years of Designing Worlds. We promised you then that we WOULD be sharing a show about OBR later in the year. Well, this is it!

We look at the events linked with OBR – the dance, the poetry, the music and the art. This year too we had the #MeToo Forest, where women could share their experiences, and the White Rose Challenge, in support of the Time’s Up movement.

What is One Billion Rising?

ONE BILLION RISING began as a call to action based on the staggering statistic that 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. With the world population at 7 billion, this adds up to more than ONE BILLION WOMEN AND GIRLS.

Every February, we rise – in hundreds of countries across the world – to show our local communities and the world what one billion looks like and shine a light on the rampant impunity and injustice that survivors most often face.  We rise through dance to express joy and community and and celebrate the fact that we have not been defeated by this violence. We rise to show we are determined to create a new kind of consciousness – one where violence will be resisted until it is unthinkable.

One Billion Rising in Second Life 2017, photographed by Wildstar Beaumont

For the fifth year, on February 14, 2017, men and women in Second Life will join activists, writers, thinkers, celebrities, and people across the world to Rise, Resist and Unite as a show of unity, individual strength, and the need for change.

One Billion Rising first began in 2013 with the fierce struggle against sexual and physical violence – taking on the advocacy against rape, battery, incest, female genital mutilation and sex trafficking that V-Day campaigns over 18 years have been at the forefront of. Over the last five years, as One Billion Rising has grown and the local campaigns deepened, it has also brought in economic violence and the violence of poverty, racial violence, gender violence, violence caused by corruption, occupation and aggression, violence caused by environmental disasters, climate change and environmental plunder, violence impacting women in the context of state sponsored wars, militarization, and the worsening internal and international displacement of millions of people, and violence created by corporate greed, among so many others.

RISE! RESIST! UNITE!

This year, One Billion Rising Revolution is giving sharper focus and visibility to the exploitation of women, and to harnessing even stronger global solidarity to demand an end to violence in all forms.

The Second Life event will feature a four-region stage where 200 people can come together to dance, surrounded by an area of art installations, an arena for poetry and dramatic productions, and informational exhibits. A variety of performers will play over the 24-hour period and poetry and dramatic events will be held at different times, enabling people all over the world to attend this virtual event no matter their timezone. The regions will have a General maturity rating to allow all residents an opportunity to participate. Pictures are welcome on the event’s Flickr group.

If you would like to volunteer to support the event, go here to find out how you can join in.

If you would like to report on the event as a member of the press, go here.

The objective of the event is to raise awareness, not to raise funds; however, information about real-world organisations will be available for those wishing to donate.

We will be announcing the sponsors for One Billion Rising shortly. If you are interested in becoming a sponsor, go here (please note, as we are not a fundraising event, we have a limited number of sponsorship spaces to cover costs of the 4 regions used for the 24 hours of music, dance, poetry, literature, art installations and shows).
