In this episode, Designing Worlds visited the Second Life Home and Garden Expo, an annual event we have supported since 2009.

In this show we talk to the organiser of the Expo – Kaerri Rae, and learn about various aspects of the event. We look at some of the great international-themed builds we saw at the Expo this year, with a film from Bain Finch, while Wildstar Beaumont shares photographs of some of the amazing gardens and landscaping that was on display. And we meet up with DaveOSaurus to take a look at Waffleville, the community area for tinies and dinkies.

Designing Worlds sponsored the Home and Garden Decorating Contest, and in this episode we take a look at the undecorated homes (thanks to Wildstar’s pictures!). We’ll be showing you what the decorated homes looked like in our second Homes and Garden Expo show – to be shown in two weeks time.

And finally we will the Lantern Ceremony, held every day at 4pm, a time for reflection and remembrance.

In this episode, Designing Worlds pays the second of two visits to the beautiful campsites and design regions that were created for the Relay Weekend that was the culmination of the 2021 Relay for Life of Second Life.

We begin with an interview with Nuala Maracase, Relay for Life Co-Ordinator, who tells us all about the five days of Hope Fest in the run-up to the Relay Weekend, and we explore the regions that were created for this event. We also talk to Silver Howler, who created the Main Stage, and also the Pursuit for a Cure team site (which we saw on last week’s show when we interviewed Stingray Raymaker).

Then we talk to several people as we explore their campsites – Arizona Ballinger-Whiplash of Relay Rockers, and Melina Furehawk of Heroes Helping Heroes, as well as looking at the Designer Area created by Isabella and Jackson Trig, RFL Win, and – a campsite to delight Saffia’s heart – the mer campsite belonging to Sol Existence.

In the most recent episode of Designing Worlds, we paid a second visit to the Home and Garden Expo. The Expo ran from 27th February to 21st March, and was a fabulous event with amazing displays of homes and furnishings, gardens and landscaping, and a range of art displays.

In this show, we explore the beautiful Designing Worlds cafe, in a building created by Danny Bourne, and landscaped and decorated for us by undercoverlady, visit the fun location of Waffleville (created for tiny.dinkie/petite designers and shoppers) with Kaerri Rae, organiser of the Expo, and talk to Stingray Raymaker, Ambassador for the American Cancer Society in Second Life.

In this show, we talk to Kaerri, the organiser of the Expo, talk to Danny Bourne or reBourne prefabs, a popular designer who has returned to Second Life after a long hiatus (and who could be seen on last week’s archive show), and see a range of exhibits, talking to some of their designers – Christiana of Needful Prims, silkiss of oobidoo, and Mizou Vavoom of Carpe Diem Design.

We also have a whistlestop tour of some of the places that really caught Saffia’s eye as she raced around the Expo very early each morning performing rolling restarts on the regions (or, as she referred to it, taking the regions for their early morning showers!), and, of course, a glorious slideshow from Wildstar Beaumont. Finally, we end with the traditional lantern ceremony that marks each day of the Expo – as it has done since 2012.

Home and Garden Expo - May 2009!

Home and Garden Expo – May 2009!

Join Designing Worlds at 2pm SLT Monday 8th March for this week’s show from the archives which goes right back to May 2009. The Second Life Home and Garden Expo is happening at present (running until March 21st – see more here: https://slhomeandgardenexpo.wordpress.com/) but we have our show from the SECOND Home and Garden Expo, way back in 2009.

You can watch it on this blog, and you can also see the show on the Designing Worlds Vimeo Archive channel at: https://vimeo.com/371353284. And you can join the special Watch Party (at 2pm SLT, Monday 25th February) in our studio on Garden of Dreams.

#041 The second Home, Garden and Patio Expo – and the very first Designing Worlds show! 6th May 2009 from Saffia Widdershins on Vimeo.

This was the first episode of Designing Worlds, the rebranding of MetaMakeover, as our partners SLCN changed over to being Treet TV. Appropriately enough, this episode saw a visit to the opening of the second Home, Garden and Patio Expo which that year covered four sims – twice the size of the 2008 Expo. Our sister publication Prim Perfect had a pavilion at the show where they’ll be showcasing new designers as part of their Prim Perfect Pathfinders project – and you can read about the show in much more detail here: http://bit.ly/32lAidp

There are quite a few changes from that show to the Expo this year – as you’ll be able to see in future episodes, as we are broadcasting two shows from this year’s Expo later this season. But, for now, relax and enjoy The Way We Were!

Our most recent episode is a feature-length visit to the very special area that was created to host the campsites, designer regions and more that made up the Relay for Life of Second Life weekend: 6–7 June 2020.

DW420 – Relay for Life of Second Life 2020 from Richard Elen on Vimeo.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Relay for Life of Second Life was one of the few Relay For Life events able to be held, thanks to it being held in a virtual world. And it was a fantastic success, raising Linden$: 76,317,509, which is the equivalent of USD: $305,270.00 – a really amazing sum!

The theme was Game On, Cancer! and it led to the creation of some spectacular designer regions and team campsites following the theme of different types of games and sports – as we learn in the show.

We talk to two of the core organisers of the event, Stingray Raymaker, Director of the American Cancer Society in Second Life, and the Ambassador to the American Cancer Society, the charity behind Relay for Life; and Nikki Mathieson, Executive Leadership Team for the American Cancer Society in Second Life.

We also talk to Mightbe Shelter, a member of one of the teams of SL motorcycle clubs who built daunting race tracks and other thrilling activities – and we experience a little of the moving Luminaria ceremony.

We also take a look at some of the regions involved in the Ten Days of Relay run-up to Relay Weekend itself, visit several of the designer regions and campsites, and view some stunning slideshows of the regions from our star photographer, Wildstar Beaumont.
