Resident Builds at SL17B, photographed by Wildstar Beaumont

Designing Worlds at SL17B, photographed by Wildstar Beaumont

Today, Monday 27th July, Designing Worlds is paying the second of two visits to the Second Life Seventeenth Birthday Community Celebration (SL17B) for the last show of the season. Two weeks ago, we looked at the Linden builds; in this show, we’ll be looking at resident builds – just a few, because there were so many wonderful ones!

Join us at 2pm  when you can see the show on the Designing Worlds Vimeo channel at: https://vimeo.com/channels/dworlds and on the Designing Worlds channel at SLArtist at: https://www.slartist.com/browse-dw-videos-1-date.html. Or join us for our Watch Party in the Designing Worlds studios at 2pm SLT.

And here is a little taster – a video shot and edited by Saffia that didn’t make it into the main show …

SL17B Dawn Kingdoms from Saffia Widdershins on Vimeo.

In the show, we look at the sites that we were involved with – Designing Worlds, One Billion Rising in Second Life, and two exhibits related to Fantasy Faire – the Fantasy Faire LitFest site (complete with Hugh the Troll) and the Fantasy Faire Radio site. And we talk to some of the creators of the exhibits, – the artists Fiona Fei and Ilyra Chardin, and our own Wildstar Beaumont who had a special gallery exhibit, which is really another of “our team sites”!

We also talk to people who are involved in creating sites for communities – Victor Mornington with a site to introduce people to New Babbage, and Asia Connell with the same mission for Camp Italia. And we explore a number of other sites too, both with film and with a fantastic photographic slideshow from Wildstar Beaumont.

Sadly, the Birthday event is now over, but we hope the show will help you re-live it … or sigh over parts you missed! It makes for a beautiful and highly interesting show so do tune in or join us at 2pm SLT at the Watch Party in Garden of Dreams!

This week, Monday 20th July at 2pm SLT, we are taking a look back at the fantastic podcar tours, designed by Yavanna Llanfair with a spin – and a row and a flight and a submersion – around the mainland. This episode was brought to my mind by discussions at last week’s SL17B show, where we ended the show by riding off on a podcar – as ever, a really great way of seeing the birthday celebrations – and the studio audience started talking about how great the Tours are.

This show is actually not on our new Archive channel (which is full of goodies!), but on the main channel. Still, as the show was first broadcast in November 2014, we think it counts as an archive show!

You can watch it on this blog, and you can also see the show on the Designing Worlds Vimeo channel at: https://vimeo.com/110869566. And you can join the special Watch Party (at 2pm SLT) in our studio on Garden of Dreams – where there will be an extra little treat for attendees!

Designing Worlds Episode 255 – PodCar Tours from Richard Elen on Vimeo.

We actually try out three tours: the first taking us to Sansara Seas and Rivers, one of nine tours available from Yavanna’s podcar hub on the Sansara continent; a fascinating tour on the little-visited teen grid (where the podcar turns into a ski lift – and then grows a ski to take us back down the mountain!); and a trip round the islands  of north western Maebaleia on the Southern Nautilus tour, one of two tours on the Maebaleia or Satori continent. And we also take a look at a fascinating railcar tour on the Heterocera continent!

Yavanna is a keen proponent of the mainland and she shares with us some of the extraordinary creations you can see on her tours, and learn more about the work that not only residents have done, but also that Linden Lab has done – and continues to do – in making the mainland an unexpectedly fascinating – and often beautiful – place to visit. And to help you discover more, you’ll find maps at each starting location that will help you discover further tours to try.

Join us today – for a show that will really open your eyes to the extraordinary mainland – and there will be a little extra treat too!

Today is the very last day to visit the Second Life Seventeenth Birthday Community Celebration (SL17B) on the grid, but you can see the first of our two visits on the web!

DW421 – Second Life 17th Community Birthday Celebration: Part1 from Richard Elen on Vimeo.

In this episode, we look at the Linden builds; in the next show, we’ll be looking at resident builds – just a few, because there were so many wonderful ones! But we’ll be seeing a sneak preview of some of those resident builds with a slideshow from Wildstar Beaumont in this episode.

Join Saffia and Elrik as we check out some of the key areas like the Welcome Area, the Tapestry of Time, the Auditorium, the Main Stage and the DJ Stage; we preview the latest Linden Homes – and we take a look at the sky. Why? Because of a special Linden Lab feature – known as EEP – Environmental Enhancement Project.

We also visited the gift area and the Hop and Shop area – an amazing shopping arcade that wasn’t actually part of the main Celebration area – but very tempting! We even visit a dinosaur park and, of course, we can’t resist a podcar trip!

This year, the theme for the Birthday was vacations and road trips, and many of the exhibits were wish-fulfilment for people who were pretty much in lockdown while they were building. In the Linden builds too there are many elements of vacations – with the stages having a lovely holiday feel.

Alien Isles

Alien Isles

This week, Monday 6th July at 2pm SLT, we are taking a look back at Alien Isles, a marvellous place with wonderful quirky art created by Lorin Tone, Judi Newall and their friends – such as Madcow Cosmos, Glyph Graves, Alazarin Mobius & Photon Pink. It was a place where some of Second Life’s most notable artists came to have fun.

Unavailable on the web for a number of years, it recently found a home on our new Archive channel (which is full of goodies!).

You can watch it on this blog, and you can also see the show on the Designing Worlds Archive Vimeo channel at: https://vimeo.com/375390270. And you can join the special Watch Party (at 2pm SLT) in our studio on Garden of Dreams.

#DW132 Alien Isles 18th July 2011 from Saffia Widdershins on Vimeo.

Many people were sad when the beautiful – and fun! – Alien Isles announced its closure back in 2011.  We decided then that we would make our planned return to the region to visit again Lorin Tone and Judi Newall (who had featured in an earlier show about sound creation – sadly, no longer available).

Alien Isles

The end of live filming by Treet.TV provided a few hic-cups, but we found a brilliant cinematographer who joined our team – Laslopantomik Yao – and with Elrik acting as our sound engineer as well as co-presenter, we got our footage in the can before the Isles closed!

It’s a fun show (with a tiny invasion!) so do join us in the studio at 2pm SLT!

Our most recent episode is a feature-length visit to the very special area that was created to host the campsites, designer regions and more that made up the Relay for Life of Second Life weekend: 6–7 June 2020.

DW420 – Relay for Life of Second Life 2020 from Richard Elen on Vimeo.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Relay for Life of Second Life was one of the few Relay For Life events able to be held, thanks to it being held in a virtual world. And it was a fantastic success, raising Linden$: 76,317,509, which is the equivalent of USD: $305,270.00 – a really amazing sum!

The theme was Game On, Cancer! and it led to the creation of some spectacular designer regions and team campsites following the theme of different types of games and sports – as we learn in the show.

We talk to two of the core organisers of the event, Stingray Raymaker, Director of the American Cancer Society in Second Life, and the Ambassador to the American Cancer Society, the charity behind Relay for Life; and Nikki Mathieson, Executive Leadership Team for the American Cancer Society in Second Life.

We also talk to Mightbe Shelter, a member of one of the teams of SL motorcycle clubs who built daunting race tracks and other thrilling activities – and we experience a little of the moving Luminaria ceremony.

We also take a look at some of the regions involved in the Ten Days of Relay run-up to Relay Weekend itself, visit several of the designer regions and campsites, and view some stunning slideshows of the regions from our star photographer, Wildstar Beaumont.

The Telethon Studio from Treet at RFL 2009

This last weekend saw the fantastic Relay for Life of Second Life weekend, the culmination of a wildly successful RFL season. We will be looking at that in more detail on the show in a few weeks … but this week, Monday 8th June at 2pm SLT, we are taking a look back to the builds of the Relay for Life weekend all the way back in 2009!

Unavailable on the web for a number of years, it recently found a home on our new Archive channel (which is full of goodies!).

And it was a classic year for great builds: from the New Babbage team we saw the exploration of Mars, and an imagining of an Exposition Universalle, based upon that of 1889 in Paris when the Eiffel Tower was first revealed; we visited the Elf Circle, the Wonders of the World region, and we finished at Anatomica, the most amazing region, which combined information and a great interactive learning experience about the physiology of cells and cancer – with a fast and furious game where you got to dress in a red suit for surfing the bloodstream and blast cancer cells yourself!
