In this episode, we pay the second of our two visits to Fantasy Faire 2020 in aid of Relay for Life of Second Life.

DW418 – Fantasy Faire 2020 Part 2 from Richard Elen on Vimeo.

We talk to Aisling Sinclair, who is in charge of the famous and fabulous Fairelands Quest, and Fantasy Faire Co-Founder and Co-Captain Zander Greene about this year’s Faire, and what the running of an event like the Faire involves.

Arcachon

Arcachon

This week on Monday 25th May at 2pm SLT, we are taking a look back to the beautiful and fascinating region of Arcachon, sadly long gone from the Second Life grid.

Unavailable on the web for a number of years, it recently found a home on our new Archive channel (which is full of goodies!).

You can watch it on this blog, and you can also see the show on the Designing Worlds Archive Vimeo channel at: https://vimeo.com/379594685. And you can join the special Watch Party (at 2pm SLT) in our studio on Garden of Dreams.

#DW188 Arcachon – 11th February 2013 from Saffia Widdershins on Vimeo.

Arcachon Atlantique, the beautiful Francophone region based on the Languedoc region of France, which had recently come close to closure, despite offering great activities and developing a brilliant immersive language learning programme.

We explored some of the beauties of the region with Claire Pascale, the owner of Arcachon and with Cybère Placebo, who had been working on developing language courses, as well as Karelia Kondor, a teacher of French in the UK, who had used the region of Arcachon in her teaching.

Arcachon

Arcachon

We explored the region, discussing the plans to use it as an immersive language resource, and also experiencing some of the activities it offered, from wine tasting, to a hot air balloon trip, to harvesting (and enjoying!) fresh oysters.

And we looked at the problems owners face in sustaining such a region.

Arcachon

Arcachon

Sadly, although publicity sustained Arcachon for several more months, some time after our visit it was forced to close.

It is a fascinating show – so do come and join us at 2pm at our studio on Garden of Dreams.

In this show, Designing Worlds visited Cain Maven, the designer behind Maven Homes and Quantum Luxury Homes – and enjoyed a good discussion with him too!

DW416 – Cain Maven from Richard Elen on Vimeo.

Cain’s Designs range from the vast (in the Quantum Luxury Homes range) to more modest styles in the Maven Homes range. We talked to him about his design concepts, and explored both types of homes. Can also allowed us a glimpse at the very first home he built – we think you’ll enjoy his caustic comments on his efforts back then!

Maven Hones, photographed by Wildstar Beaumont

Maven Hones, photographed by Wildstar Beaumont

But his more recent homes range from classical builds to the ultra modern, built with style and class – there is a reason why both brands are so popular!

We also took the time for a longer discussion with Cain on issues such as the new Linden Homes and the sale of Sansar – does Cain see the Sansar project as a waste of time, or as a valuable learning experience (on many levels) for the Lab.

Medical Training at Imperial College London

Medical Training at Imperial College London

This week on Monday 30th March at 2pm SLT, we take a look into the archives, to see again our show from 2010 on the uses that Imperial College London have made of virtual worlds (Second Life) for medical training to help doctors, nurses – and vulnerable patients.

Imperial College have been world leaders in modelling the path of the coronavirus pandemic; this show gives you a chance to see some of their other work.

You can watch it on this blog, and you can also see the show on the Designing Worlds Archive Vimeo channel at: https://vimeo.com/373063396. And you can join the special Watch Party (also at 2pm SLT) in our studio on Garden of Dreams.

#109 Medical training with Imperial College London – 29th November 2010 from Saffia Widdershins on Vimeo.

In this show we explore a fascinating series of projects relating to medical education and public health awareness from one of the UK’s most highly regarded universities.

We will be looking at projects they have developed for their own Postgraduate Medical Training Centre, and in partnership with a whole range of other organisations including the government agency NHS for London, the University of Brighton, Sussex Partnerships NHS, the Grace Eyre Foundation and even the Royal College for Art!

Medical Training at Imperial College London

These projects seek to use Second Life in innovative ways for training doctors, nurses and other health professionals in areas ranging from crisis management on hospital wards to the most effective forms of signage in hospital corridors.

And there are also projects that relate to patients too.  We’ll be seeing how a re-creation of Brighton sea-front is used to help patients with learning difficulties understand how hospital procedures will affect them – and how Second Life can be used to demonstrate to Londoners how a Polyclinic can improve their healthcare.

All in all, this is a fascinating programme – and one that you shouldn’t miss! So do tune in or join us at 2pm SLT at the Watch Party in Garden of Dreams!
