This episode of Designing Worlds is our annual Hallowe’en Tale – and we have a great one for you this year – The Monkey’s Paw by WW Jacobs. In the story, three wishes are granted to the owner of The Monkey’s Paw, but the wishes come with an enormous price for interfering with fate.

William Wymark Jacobs (1863 – 1943) was an English author of short fiction and drama, with his best remembered story being “The Monkey’s Paw”. Jacobs was also known for comical tales about sailors, on ship and ashore but “The Monkey’s Paw”, published in 1902, is a classic tale of the macabre – a standout even when MR James and EF Benson were writing some of the best tales in the genre. The Edwardian period was a highpoint for this genre, and perhaps you won’t be surprised to learn that we therefore filmed this episodes in the streets, the homes and the factories of New Babbage.

A little sidenote, for the literary minded – on 7 January 1914, in King’s Hall, Covent Garden, Jacobs was a member of the jury in the mock trial of John Jasper for the murder of Edwin Drood. At this all-star event G. K. Chesterton was Judge and George Bernard Shaw appeared as foreman of the jury.

So do come and join us for our Watch Party at 2pm today in the Garden of Dreams – or watch it on the web!

And remember – for many parts of the world, the clocks have gone back and so 2pm SLT will today be an hour earlier in your timezone!

This was our special episode of Designing Worlds for the 2022 visit to some of the stunning places created for Halloween in Second Life.

This year we are going for atmospheric designs (although, if you prefer your Halloween as gory as possible, we do pay a brief visit to the Halloween Haunted Tour, built by the Moles).

And we found three wonderfully atmospheric and haunted designs …

We start at Haunted Hollow, created by Honey Heart of Elite Equestrian, and Sillve, along with others from the Elite Equestrian. It’s a beautiful creation, rich with touches of the pagan and filled with amazing detail – just stop and examine every place you pass!

Next we take a trip to the beautiful Shadowfell, created by Tymus Tenk and Truck Meredith of Calas Galadhon. This year they have gone for spooky mystery (and a few jokes too!) to create an absolutely lovely environment. Take the boat tour for an initial exploration – and then explore on foot to see the hidden places, such as the caves.

Finally, we visit the wonderful post-apocalyptic vision of New Orleans, complete with zombies and other ghostly happenings -created by the region landscape designer, Kaiden Tray. Realistic details mingle with dark fantasy here – and are not to be missed.

And there’s location film from Bain Finch, and wonderful photography of other Halloween places from Wildstar Beaumont.

It all makes for a spookily stunning show – so do join us for our Watch Party in the beautiful Designing Worlds studios in the Garden of Dreams, or watch on the web!

You can visit all of these locations, at least till the end of October!

This October, Designing Worlds is showing a special season of Halloween episodes – with two new episodes for the end of the month! Our second episode is an October 2012 show, when we visited the darkly beautiful region of Venexia for a really gorgeous Halloween show special.

Join us at 2pm SLT today, Monday 17th October for Designing Worlds at our studio in Garden of Dreams in Second Life, or watch here on the web:

Venexia is an adult roleplay sim with a vampire theme. It’s set in a time when La Serenissima, the beautiful Venice that inspired this region, was at the height of its power and, some would suggest, its decadence. This stunningly lovely region, created by Baal Zobel and  Kora Zenovka, certainly promises both power and decadence, and the enthusiastic patrons have evolved a rich and complex roleplay, befitting the surroundings.

The canals of Venexia

Visitors can join in or, if they wish to remain out of character, can simply visit (although we’d recommend you adapt a suitable costume to allow you to discreetly blend with your surroundings).

In the company of the Contessa Seabreeze  (who is, under another name, an old friend of the show!), Nena Easterwood and Amberlyssa Marie Bauerhoff, we explore some of the beautiful locations and discuss some of the roles and traditions that are practised in Venexia.

All this – and a Vampire Ball to attend; very appropriate for Halloween!

It makes for a very dark and very beautiful show. So do come and join us at 2pm!

Sadly, Venexia no longer exists – but if you know of any similar regions, do let us know in the comments!

This October, Designing Worlds is planning a special season of Halloween episodes – with two new shows for the end of the month! We’re going to start with an October 2014 show, when we visited one of the moodiest and most sinister regions on the grid — the town of Innsmouth.

Join us at 2pm SLT today, Monday 10th October for Designing Worlds at our studio in Garden of Dreams in Second Life, or watch here on the web.

Innsmouth is a fascinating region – based on the horror stories of HP Lovecraft (whom many call the most influential horror writer of the 20th century), it has plenty of mysterious and hidden places to explore – all in the tradition of Lovecraft’s mysterious New England coastal towns. It was also, of course, an important location in Season 1 of The Blackened Mirror (as we shall learn).

But in 2014, Innsmouth was in danger of being lost. A campaign began to save this wonderful region by its supporters, led by Arik Metzger, who – together with Terra Volitant – joined us on the show.

The campaign was successful – and you can still visit Innsmouth in Second Life today at: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Innsmouth/150/142/47. Why not pop in – and see what has changed?

This is one of the very few shows not to feature Saffia, whose typist was suffering from a badly sprained knee. So you will see Elrik and Aisling Sinclair exploring the spooky town!

Images of Buckingham Palace by Wildstar Beaumont

Designing Worlds marked the passing of Queen Elizabeth II with a very special show, part discussion of what this means to people, and part visiting some of the memorials that people created.

Our discussion was hosted by the royalty of Antiquity in their beautiful re-creation of Buckingham Palace, and we are joined by Kess Crystal, Mrs Sassypants, Liz Wilner, Jacon Cortes, Jorge Serapis and Mary Layton. We also visit the Portrait Gallery and Church created by Liz Wilner and Oriella Charik, and the special chapel created by Jorge Serapis. We also visit the event held in Antquity.

Now that official mourning has ended, memorials have largely disappeared – if some still remain, we’d love to hear about them! But you can still visit the magnificent re-creation of Buckingham Palace in Antiquity at: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Antiquity%20Texas/154/176/2002.

Circe’s Jazz Club

Join us at 2pm SLT today, Monday 26th September for Designing Worlds at our studio in Garden of Dreams in Second Life, or watch here on the web as we revisit a show from 2012, when we visited Laurel Arts Isle, which – at that time – included the longest-running music venue in Second Life.

Saffia and Elrik toured the Ancient-Egypt themed Laurel Arts Isle, where Circe Broom created extensive multiple music stages and poetry areas in a beautiful Ancient Egyptian environment with the help of her colleagues.

On the show, we explore with Circe and Vince Merrick the different stage areas including the Luxor and Memphis stages, and the Cairo Theatre – and we also visit the well-known Sunset Jazz Club as well as seeing the area where popular poetry and story-telling sessions take place.

Classical music at Laurel Arts Isle

And we also discussed changes in Second Life that were causing areas like Laurel Arts Isle to close.

In addition to the problems we discussed, we were aware that Circe, who was such a very fervent supporter of music and poetry in Second Life, was gravely ill. She was suffering from COPD and was facing this with enormous courage. Later in the year she moved to a hospice. By then she was only occasionally coming in to Second Life but in June, as part of the Second Life 9th Birthday celebrations,KT Syakumi built an amazing region wide (and long) Egyptian stage. Knowing how much Circe loved Egyptian artefacts, I longed to show it to her and one day, I was fortunate enough to see her online. Together with Crap Mariner, a old friend of Circe’s, we explored the lost temples and sand dunes of the build. She died a few weeks after that.

I hope you’ll enjoy seeing this wonderful show again – either here on the web, or joining us at the Designing Worlds at our studio in Garden of Dreams in Second Life.

Join us at 2pm SLT today, Monday 12th September for Designing Worlds at our studio in Garden of Dreams in Second Life, or watch here on the web as we revisit a show from 2015 where we looked at the career and particle magic of the well-known creator, muscian and machinima-maker, ColeMarie Soliel.

ColeMarie has had a fascinating career, both inworld and on the wider web, and she talks to us about this, as well as demonstrating some of her beautiful particle effects – and explaining why the development of particle scripting in Second Life made her enthusiastic to return and start creating again.
