In this week’s Designing Worlds, we visited the wonderful 24 hour event that was One Billion Rising 2019.

DW392 – One Billion Rising in Second Life 2019 from Richard Elen on Vimeo.

On February 14, 2019, women and men in Second Life joined people across the world to Rise as a show of unity, individual strength, and the need for change. The event featured a four-region stage where 200 people could dance together, surrounded by an area of art installations and informational exhibits.

This year the One Billion Rising event continued last year’s theme – we RISE in Solidarity Against the Exploitation of Women in a world where governments and leaders seem to be increasingly anti-women. And we also had a special tribute to the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize laureates – Denis Mukwege and Nadia Murad – for their work against sexual violence as a weapon of war.

As in previous years, we asked a variety of performers to play over the 24-hour period, which let people all over the world attend the event no matter their timezone. The regions had a General maturity rating to allow all residents an opportunity to participate.

This programme documents OBR in SL 2019 and includes interviews with leading contributors and co-creators.

In this week’s episode of Designing Worlds we look at a sadly all too real phenomenon: when people disappear from Second Life and – often – from real life too.

DW391 – Legacy from Richard Elen on Vimeo.

What legacy do they leave behind? And what steps should we be taking to protect our legacy – and make sure our friends understand what has happened?

We talk to Jo Yardley, who has written a fascinating article on this issue, and other people who have been affected too – both by people who have died, and people who have suddenly disappeared, sometimes with devastating consequences for those who knew them, worked with them, and loved them.

Guest on the show include Jo Yardley, KT Syakumi, Stevie Basevi, Kess Viiperi, and Adele Ward.

Sanctuary, photographed by Wildstar Beaumont

Sanctuary, photographed by Wildstar Beaumont

In the first episode of our new season, we discover a fascinating desert location, the setting for Sanctuary, a very successful roleplay community that has been running for eleven years.

We talk to some of the people behind the roleplay, Stevie Basevi, Belial Darwinian, Ŝĥαďє χ Rαιη (assisted by Tanith Rosenbaum) as we explore the streets and marketplaces – and learn all about the beautiful immersive world of Sanctuary. There are humans and demons and a rich backstory that has been in progress for eleven years.

There’s also an amazing HUD system in place too, that allows people to fight, craft, farm and generally immerse themselves in a whole rich way of life. And don’t miss Elrik exploring the terrors of the underworld!

Yes, it’s the time of year when Saffia and Elrik set out for an innocent visit to New Babbage and discover … what could possibly go wrong. Yes, it’s our Christmas Special – and it’s on the web for you to enjoy!

DW389 – Designing Worlds Christmas Special 2018 from Richard Elen on Vimeo.

Miss Widdershins and Mr Merlin are visiting the steampunk city of New Babbage to learn all about the Urchins’ Christmas Ball, where Steam Santa will give presents to the Urchins, while the Boiler Elf adjudicates between those who have been good and bad.

Or at least, that is the plan …

But when Steam Santa disappears, Miss Widdershins and Mr Merlin find themselves caught up in a nefarious plot which they must resolve with the aid of Mr Mornington, the Assistant Maceholder of New Babbage, Miss Heinrichs, the Captain of the New Babbage Militia and, of course, the redoubtable (and hapless) Mr Biggins.

To say nothing of New Babbage’s leading forensic scientist, an expert in tracking and a crowd of urchins …
